flipping things i dont mind seeing them at shows but i got stuck behind one in swindon and i was praying and praying that it would fall apart so i could run over the ruins and actually get past the 2.5mph it was going

Love it.

Never been into steam trains but love these. There used to be a big rally for them on the Town Moor here every year when I was a kid. Not seem them here for many years now.
My Dad always took me. I would love to have a go driving one.

It was one of those events that I saw my first Dragster. A supercharged early Hemi slingshot. No idea why it was there. It had done some demonstration runs at Newcastle Airport I think. I got to sit in it and my love for the Top Fuel Hemi began.

Did they have Hemis back in the early 30s Dave...ya know when you were a lad!!!

My Grandad used to run steam traction engines around Herts and Beds...his six tone Foden steam lorry was good for about 20 miles per hour I think.

Not Bad really seeing as how heavy goods lorries were limited to 25mph even up to the 1960s.

The Sentinel S type steam waggons could maintain 50 to 60 mph in the mid 1930's when 20 mph was the speed limit for lorries.

The most stressful time I've had with steam was steering a Fowler roller from North Kent down to Sussex in a day,about 45 miles at 4 mph average.

The most relaxing time was lake dredging for 6 weeks with a pair of Fowler ploughing engines.

Fowler ploughing engines - fabulous. There is a newly restored pair that were ploughing at Stotfold Mill two weeks ago, Bedfordshire is steam central, lots of engines around, and the Shuttleworth steam fair is one of the biggest in the country, 3 miles from us. Great weekend out. Both the kids muck in with firebox emptying and polishing.
Money is the issue to running one so it helps to know people that own a few engines and need helpers to look after them.
