howb are the 4 speed manuals like to live with..
ive driven a few yank manuals and gearchanges can be clunky and clutches quite heavy
but never have i driven a a833..
what are they like??
i was going to fit s modern 5 speed to my 318 '68 barracuda but i know for a 4 speed and it will be easier to fit so i am asking the question.. what are they like??
will be my daily driver but will be used for the strip and short circuit maybe a sprint and drift event too...
any thoughts?
plus anything to check before i buy are they strong etc....?

very strong gearbox, yes they are heavy going but good fun used to use my 4 speed sixbarrel runner daily loved it, but i was a pup then and wouldnt entertain it now,

I liked mine and was the best fun I'd ever had on the street. The clutch I originally had, had lever type cover so it was a bit heavy. Although I later changed that for a Centerforce diaphragm cover, and was a lot lighter. The shift was OK albeit a bit 'agricultural' - went you shift into another gear, you knew it had engaged
All in all I liked it, BUT was a handful for me on the Strip, so went Manual shift Auto.

Liked mine - snucked into gear nicely, with a nice pistol-gripped throw. Pain to change the clutch (as I had to do) as the trans is heavy as mentioned, and does not balance at all well on a trolley jack...
2nd to 3rd is a bit long (RPM-wise) and type of clutch does dictate how heavy it is on the pedal.
Still, good trans though.
However, swapped for a reverse-pattern-manual-shift 727 and I wont be reverting back!

If you used a aussie 318 bell housing they fit the aussie Borgwarner 4 speed singlerail box used ion any 4 speed aussie valiant from 72 -78.
you can also get correct tunnel hump for shifter for nottalotta cash
only issue is the clutch is on the wrong side for a LHD car
so you would need to also get the hyraulic set up off a aussie ford or a aussie chrysler centura.
this is a light easy shifting box used by chrysler Aus behind 265s and 318s, ford Aus behind ??? bigger than 300 CUI V8s (sandy can tell ya),
and leyland behind the 3.5 and 4.2 liter buick v8 used in the Leyland P75
they are not the end of the line in longevity if you attack them with massive shock loads but behind a reasonbaly high torque motor if its delivered smoothly they last years. i.e you wouldn't spend many seasons with one side stepping the clutch and power shifting
but are very simple and robust for their size
and will easy fit the tunnel in any A body
rebuild kits contain everything apart from synchro rings (available separately) and are not a lot
the spline on the box is the same as a 904
i can use my tail shaft that is in the back of my 4 speed with a small block 727 as well if i even need to as the length is just about right
aussie guys swap from this box to toyota supra Turbo 5 speed...to get that extra gear, they end up never using 1st and some manage to break the toyota box....which is quite hard.

All the hydraulic clutch parts are still available: master and slave cylinder's, and reasonably priced.
The advantage of the Aus Ford bell housing and clutch set-up is any of the T5 or TKO's bolt straight up with no clutch modifications at all. The only snag is shift lever placement.

i have a supra 5 speed that i was to fit and a steel bellhousing but have decided at least for now a a833 might be easier given that i want to use the car sooner rather than later..
i know for a short tailhousing a833 from an a-body plus 2x shifters clutch pedals tunnel hump and crossmember...
thing is mine is a uk car so rhd...
so i either cut the bellhousing for a rhd side leaver release or most prob fit a hyd release and mod the pedal etc to go hydrolic...
i will just use a omega or whatever hyd' re;lease bearing or make/mod the std leaver for a external slave cylinder whatever seems easiest...
i dont suppose anyone has a flywheel and clutch about do they#???
thought i had one sorted but that seems to have not happened...
