aye, I think you're about right there. I'm thinking of mounting the gas tank with velcro the number of times I've had to pull the sodding thing off now. I'm getting quite handy at it though. Anyone need a C Body tank dropping I can do it in half the time now.
That jelly is evil ,I used to run a '48 austin 16 that did that trick every couple of weeks. The stuff was stuck all over the baffles ,the car was laid up with stale fuel in the tank for some years. Whats your tank like where it has that felt stuff stuck to it ? Mine's very rusty where water has got between tank & felt ,maybe pinholed so might be asking for a c body tank before long.

the tanks really good, its a california car only been here 2 years, I gave it a lick of black rust proofing paint anywere it seemed to have any surface rust starting.
Ive had this sort of problem with the Charger and a Hunter I had did similar with all the paint peeling off the inside and blocking the pick up pipe.
I have now resorted to rigging up a pick up filter in the tank, by cutting open a plastic in line filter and fixing it to the end of the pick up pipe.
It seems to help.

Yeah, exactly what I did to that Austin. Used a pick-up filter from a range rover . Eventually cured the worst of it til rust flakes started dropping down , condensation damage to inside top of tank .Does that water cause the jelly over time? I've heard something about some of the additives being hygroscopic so attracting the moisture and emulsifying the fuel. Anybody a tribologist?
