Unfortunately because of my current illness that could well be on the cards as of this morning...

A message from Dr John Hogan, Registrar

Dear Colleagues

This morning, the University has been notified that a case of swine 'flu has been confirmed in the city in an individual who has recently returned from Mexico.

This person is not a Newcastle University student, or a member of staff. However, they are resident in a house which is shared with two Newcastle University students. Neither of the students concerned has so far displayed any 'flu-like symptoms. Both students have received the antiviral Tamiflu, and they and the University have been advised by the Health Protection Agency that there is no need for the students to isolate themselves from the community unless they show symptoms.

Funny how these people think they can predict this, when 90% of the time, they can't even get the next day right!!!!!!!!! :?

Now now Steve. That's not true. They get the 3 day forecast right about 80% of the time and the next day forecast about 90% right. I am a keen weather watcher. ;)

With this long range forecast all they can say is that generally it will be a hotter and dryer summer. That means on average. That does not mean it will not slash down every weekend. It is just that your chances of good weekends are better than last year.

And lets face it. It wouldn't take much to be better than last year.

In the words of the lovely Shirley,
I'm only happy when it rains,
You want to hear about my new obsession
I'm riding high upon a deep depression.....
I'm only happy when it rains.
I am keeping this Mopar....... SOLD!

I saw a bit on the news last nite where they explained that our last 2 wet summers were cos the Jetstream got 'held up' over the Atlantic and didnt bring the warm weather as far as the UK. The good forecast for this year is cos they dont think the Jetstream will get held up again (didnt explain what held it up tho  )

I had been watching Thursdays (yesterday) forecast all week for my son's first cricket match, and the Met Office reckoned rain all day round here - not a drop fell all day :)

Thank gawd they're not right all the time :thumbright:

You can't take weather forecasts at face value. That is the key.
They will forecast rain if there is a chance of it. Because they get loads of complaints if they said it would be dry and it wasn't. I think they feel it is better to be prepared for rain. Then if it doesn't it is a bonus.

The other problem is this country has so many micro climates. Where I live it is often raining to the North and South of me but it stays dry in Newcastle if the weather is from the west. That happens all the time. If the weather comes from the South where my Dad lives in Corbridge near Hexham you can actually see the clouds part and pass either side of the village and it will rain in Newcastle to the east of him and on the hills to the west.

My problem is that because of my condition ANY flu is pretty bad for me and can give me more brain damage. Which is why I am a little concerned about this new one.

Its best if you don't take any notice of the Media ;) if your going to Die then you cant stop it! you will anyway that's certain :D

My Brother does not watch the news or read any papers and he is quite happy,he said to me to give it a go and i did :thumbright: just by not reading or watching the news for a few days i felt 10 times better :thumbright: its a bit of a pain though when someone mentions something like a disaster etc and you have no idea what there on about?

As to weather i used to live in Cheshire and work in Bolton,on the motorway in just a 25mile trip the weather was often the opposite way around,Rainy in Bolton Dry in Cheshire,or rainy in Cheshire and dry in Bolton,it was amazing,my ears would always POP on the drive back to Cheshire just like been in a plane, and the weather would often be diffrent.
