727 Tranny Casings

Post by Anonymous »

This question may seem silly but,

my 727 trannny for my charger is all aluminium, from bell housing to tailshaft - the lot! It is the #'s matching tranny not an aftermarkety typish one. Is this normal? I thought the casings on these boxes were cast iron!. The 4-speed manual I recently sold was iron so I assumed the auto's were too.

Thanks

Clive

Many thanks Hugh.

I was surprised to find out the tranny was ally. When I got it out of the car, my mate was supporting the front with rope standing in the engine bay and I was underneath with the tailshaft on my shoulder. I slid it out under the drivers door of the car and he said "carefull mate, its heavy. I got out fromunder the car, picked the whole thing up and walked it to my landrover, then took it out and carried it to my garage. I then put it back in landie, down to the local garage and jetwashed it. Its like a big handbag (not that I carry one anyway :D )

I wish I could do that with my engine

lol, they're ok if you haven't gorra carry them to far,

at avon park, about 7 years ago, i was helping smax out, about half way up the pit lane, i went to collect my trans from a guy who was right down by the fire up lane, 100yds ?
i remember the car being blocked in so i decided to carry it, at the time i was manager of a heavyside builders yard, so well used to humping 50kg bags of cement onto me shoulder (probably the fitest i've ever been, eve owned a 6pack for a year or two !!),
so, with a little help, i got it up onto my shoulder (upside-down and tailshaft forward) and started walking, after 50 yrds i was desperately trying to hid my grimace, by the time i got to the car i couldn't even walk in a straight line !! legs had completely gone and luckily a mate was there to rescue the box as it headed towad gravities source !!!

so, while they're light enuf to pick up, do not be fooled into thinking you can go far with them !!

i couldnt fnd the thermo housing, it may be at my shed, i thought t'd be on the pump housing but it aint, i'll be down there at the weekend if thats any good to you ?

cheers

ps, if ya do one yerself, be careful not to tighten bolts too tight, most of them have very low torque settings, there's no steel thread inserts in these things !

I was going to say. I would not like to carry one far. I prefer to slide them on an old blanket or bit of carpet.

Will use some carpet to put it back (it was slid on hay to get it out (dont ask!)) as it is being rebuilt next week by Mr. Bishop and when I get it back I will need to be carefl with it.

Might just tuck it under my arm and run up to Harlow with it
