How is this done without ruining the trim chaps?
I imagine it is some kind of sprung clip arrangement but is there away of releasing the trim without damaging it?
It turned out to be simple. You ease up one edge so you can see the clips, then with a thin flat bladed thing you just pop off the clip and the trim comes free... Much easier to do than to explain.
Mind you mine came off easily because about three-quarters of the clips had rusted away to nothing.
Anyone know if these are obtainable 'locally'?
I made a tool for it- get a bit of flat bar about 6" long or so, 3/4" wide and 1/16" thick.
You then want a 90 degree bend 3/16" from the end and an opposing 45 degree bend about an inch from that.
File the edges around the business end so they're fairly sharp then tape the other end or push a bit o pipe over it- thats your handle!
To use, lift the trim edge carefully with a screwy and slip the tool under the trim with the 90 bend down. Slide it along gently til you hit a clip, then you kind of wiggle it between the trim and the clip (gets easy with practice!)
I had to reshape the tool end a couple of times before it worked well.
There was a thread on here a while ago with pics of clips and i think a supplier or someone who had some? James seems to have a good memory for stuff on here!
