440 Motor

Post by shifter »

Fitted this motor into my coronet a couple of months ago. Took about 18 months to complete! Most of that time was collecting parts as the money came in. Its a 440 block with a forged crank from a 413 motor. apart from the block, crank, rods and bare heads everything else is new - usual stuff - comp cams, clevite, felpro etc.
Bored out +030" to siut TRW flat top pistons. Rotating assembley balanced by Performance Unlimited.
If I do it again I will get someone else to fit the cam bearings and cam as it took hours of scraping to get the camshaft to turn freely. Fitting the pistons to the rods was also time consuming by the time I made a jig to keep the weight off the pistons while pressing the pins home.
Probably done about 500 miles so far, only problem being the fuel pump pushrod wearing down rapido. Hopefully it was on its limit when I put it in as it was one of the few used parts internally.

Nice work Mr. Shifter!

As a rule we don't press the pistons onto the rods, we just warm the small-end gently to around 300 degrees and the pin slides in a treat!
I see there are no cut-outs in da pistons so its a mild low compression build, safe and sound!!!
Cam bearings are a pain, but the new generation Aussie 'Durabonds' have more clearance in stock form so no need to hand scrape.

Bacca is impressed TOO! :D :thumbright:
