Carb problem

Post by Anonymous »

I have a few problems, all related to the carb, on the Dart at the moment. I am running an Edelbrock Performer carb, and it will happily idle at about 800 ish when hot, but after running it on the open road for a while the idle sits at about 1100 rpm, it will then slowly creep down if I let it idle for a few minutes. The other 2 problems are on light throttle ie about 40-60 mph the car seems to surge/hunt and when i pull away the throttle doesn't seem to do anything for the first bit of travel then the engine will pickup, not the coolest of ways to leave a set of light!
If anyone has any ideas I'd appreciate it, other than taht I'm tempted to ditch the Edelbrock in favour of a Holley.

If you do decide to ditch the Edlebrock I could quote you on a Demon baselined and setup for your application.
If you want a quote i would need a spec sheet filling out with as much info on the motor and car and what you want to do with it, the spec sheets are on our website and they are send back to me via email, FBO and Barry Grant then will spec the carb for the car, Don at FBO will then do the baseline and setup.

To give you an idea of cost i'm awaiting 2 at the moment one was around ?330 and the other was around ?380 but it all depends on the car and the Demon needed

I don't want to do Neil out of a sale but I doubt there is very much wrong with your carb. Edelbrocks (even less than holleys) don't normally "go wrong". What happens is people either mess with them or change the spec of the engine.

I would check to see that the throttle return spring is doing its job correctly all the time and I would also suspect that you have the wrong springs on the metering rods for the amount of vacuum you have. Nothing a tuning kit wouldn't put right.

If you can't or can't be bothered with tuning I am sure Neil will see you right.

No worries Dave i totally understand that people want the best for the least amount of ?? and if a bit of tuning or a few parts puts it right then thats the way to go.

If on the other hand it needs replacing then i can sort a Demon which will be pretty much bolt on and go.

All our Demons come with a very good tuning guide anyway which cuts through all the mystery and makes any tuning very easy.
Saying that if all the car specs are correct then the carb should be bolt on and go and if any minor tuning issues come up then any further help is free.

Dean we need to get a timing light on this as it may bethe same problem that I had. It may be the advance in the dizzy sticking slightly try disconecting the vac advance and see if it still happens then also put some 3in1 oil between the base plate and the advance plate .

Guy, I've already run it with the vac disconnected ( as i thought it was the same problem we had with Nick's notchback ) but it was still the same. I think it may be as Dave suggested, running weak etc, I really need to use the tune up kit you got me, but need some instructions, as kit came without them. Have you got any lying around?
