Back axle

Post by Anonymous »

Doh!! :( I wonder how many people this has happened too....

Pulled the shafts to replace the bearings & seals and looked inside and there's a half a small pin with a button on the end shining back at me and daylight coming the a hole in the center of the diff.......check the other side for something similar inside the axle tube but no I've had to remove the diff now to fish out the other half, pushed out the old broken roll pin and put it back together now but even my chiltons didn't say anything about it or show it in a diagram.

Learning all the time!

All's well that ends well :thumbright:

Hi KP,

You must have the earlier style 'Detroit Locker' which has this common fault.
I did a diff on a mates 65 Fury last week and he has the same problem!
The small button on each side of the cross-shafts are held in place with a small rollpin.
This takes all the side load when cornering and normally wears out the button and cross-shaft locating holes.
Even fitting a new pair of buttons and roll pin may not sort the problem.
You will probably need a new pair of cross-shafts too.

Not good news for all early locker users, 40 years of cornering, not a great problem in the States, very few corners LOL!

Hi Bacca
Thanks for the reply it does seem to be a weak idea but it all went back OK and adjusted up to the correct tolerance, just done 300 miles and no nasty noises, but what should I look out for? ,I'll check the side play again to make sure that its not broken again I think.

Plenty of bloody corners down here I think every one was Bananarama! when they put the first roads in or they wouldn't let the Romain's in
