My 72 Dodge Dart Swinger

Post by Dave81 »

Thought its was time that i posted some proper details/pics of my 72 Dart.

I purchased the car at the end of August from Miles and its my first foray into Yank ownership..........I've enjoyed every minute so far. :thumbright:

The car was built at the Hamtramck Michigan Plant in July 1972.

The only bit of American history i have it that the car was located in San Pablo Cali in 86. I have a receipt with the name Elijah H Banks III, so take it that thats one of the previous owners.

There is also a Dept of Defense tag on the front bumper which propbaly means that its been on a military base at some point too as a privately owned vehicle.

The car was brought in by Rays Classics in 2009, and i'm the 3rd owner in the UK!

The Car:
The body is solid as a rock and has that Cali patina (read sunbleached), with a few surface rust blemishes/parking dents. I've honestly not seen a near original car that is nearly 40 that is this solid! The chrome is past its best but it fits in with the overall curent look of the car!  8-)

Under the hood is a stock 318 running a 3 speed 904 mated to a 7 1/4 with 2.76's (more cruise than muscle atm). The only aftermarket addition being the 2 barrel carb that has been dumped in favour of a 4 barrel Eddy.

The car has front discs and rear drums (small bolt pattern) sitting on 15" compomotive wheels. I've got the original 14" Ralley's sat in the garage should i want to go back to stock.

The interior is all Blue and and needs a bit of tidying, saying that, the main thing is that all the parts are there!!

I intend to go through the car bit by bit and improve/modify untill i've got it to where i want, but due to the imminent arrival of me and the wifes first, i'm sure that its going to be pretty much in its current state for the forseable future. Suits me though, as i'm not one for show cars/trailer queens!

So............its going to be a long term project rather than a quick turnaround.

The main thing is the car runs, drives, stops and puts a grin on the face!

End goal would be a 360 running circa 350hp with an 8 3/4 Suregrip leaving 11's on the road.

Anyway, for those that havent seen pics already here are some under my ownership (sorry about the quality phone and sun don't mix)..........

Nice one Dave! Liking that! Tax exempt - bah humbug!!! (just jealous!).
Good luck - my Challenger has been "on-going" since I bought it in 2002, but that's one of many things I like about it and the hobby!

8-) Nice car Doug. :thumbright:. It would be interesting to know how many 72's are currently in the UK?

The rims have grown on me slightly. Ideally i'd love some 15" cop/poverty steels all blacked out with raised white letter tyres.

Problem is, as my research is proving, small bolt pattern wheels are like rocking horse......... :?

they had 3 ranges

but basically they only had A Bodies

even the chargers and VH range are A body although they start to take up as much space as a US ebody by the time you get to the charger

hillman (UK wheels) CKD Kits assembly basically

chrysler valiant (62-67 US wheels 4inch PCD) (67-70 aus wheels 4 inch PCD) 71-82 4.5 inch PCD

disk brakes from 69 first year was 4 inch PCD solid disks

all cars used small balljoints so an aussie disk brake swap to a pre 73 dart is easy

dodge (utes were as per Chrysler valiant c body Phoenix as per US fury 4.5)

look for wheels off a VE (looks like a USvaliant) VF VG (both 68 dodge dart derived) Valiant

so any steels, ROH alloys, Kelsey hayes and Sankey Benson alloys off a VE VF or VG any shaped aussie valiant will do the job

Aunger also did some wheels but focused mainly on ford at 4.5 inch PCD

Valiant was a model range of A bodies from Plymouth in US

Valiant was the brand name of the chrysler produced family car in Aus all A body derived

Dodge in aus was a truck range.
(aussie trucks are pretty unique drawing from some models that dodge commer in KEW made)

But when it comes to UTES

a VG dodge wayfarer UTE is just a basic version of a VG valiant ute same body different badge
when i say trucks i mean 1/2 3/4 1 and 2 tonne carrying capacity trucks

They also did a bit of badge engineering to allow them to sell Kit built 4 door furys...300 indivually numbered with Plaque on the dash per year from mid sixties until i think 71

fury bodies came from canada. mechanicals followed US C body with a 1-2 year lag in the early days
