Temperature gauge misreading

Post by Anonymous »

I hope this doesn't turn out to be 'getting a bit warm in here' part two!

Okay, lecky fan is still in and the only gauge I could get on the rush was alos lecky. I know, capillary gauge is better, but Declan at Real Steal only had an electric one and he assured me it was just as good and easier to fit. Having topped up the gear oil and gotten my gearchanges back in the right place, I took it for a once around the block. With the engine idling it held a nice regular 180-190f, getting on the road the temperature did climb a bit, to around 200f, maybe a tad more but stopped there, never hitting 210. Now I guess that that still isn't spot on, even though Tony at kenlowe suggests that the fan should let the car run a bit hotter than I was used to. However, as the car was cooling off, I had left the fan and pump on and watched the temp drop. As soon as the fan cut out the gauge dropped almost 10f. I started the car up, watched the gauge rise, and as soon as the fan cut in, the gauge lept up by the same amount. Now I'm going to take this up with Declan, but has anyone else observed this effect? The words voltage regulator come to mind, any thoughts?

Ah, hang on, I think I could be answering my own question here, but I think that the cable that powers the fan relay is connected to the one that supplies temporary live to the meter. as the fan cuts in the relay stops drawing a bit of current and the meter suddenly pops up?

Does this make sense? More to the point, if it is the reason, do I at least redeem my (wash yer mouth out) poor wiring by working it out myself?

Nice to see the trans is ok....

here's something i noticed on wildmans charger.

It had a very small F**d plastic fan mounted directly to the water pump with no spacer so it was basically doing nothing, also there are 2 big electric fans mounted in front of the rad but not wired yet.

I've had to have it running for quite a while on and off while flogging a dead horse of a distributor and trying several others, anyway temp kept coming up due to the crap mech fan, so I went straight to the battery with the electric fan wires, on and off to cool it as needed which they did instantly but when they were on the motor on tickover ran terrible now the timing isn't right due to the crap distributor and the mixture probably isn't right either as you can't set the mixture until the timing is ok.

There is a new electronic voltage reg on there but I still think that on tickover or very low revs the fans draw way to much current to be used for primary cooling on a street car with the stock charging system. Maybe when your fan is on it's the current draw thats affecting the electrical temp guage, but saying that i'm no electrician

So yesterday we had a trip up to Dunc's got a BIG flexi stainless fan and spacer which does the job A1 and the fans are now going to be used with a temp controller and overide switch as backup and my guess is they will never come on.
Also got a distibutor... cheers Dunc top job.... by the way has anyone got 5 gallon of patience for wildman :D :D
