For every person I ever knew who says Molyslip or Slick 50 or what ever is a great thing, I knew another who said it wrecked engines and was the worst thing ever. So on that basis = :?

Theres a couple of websites out there telling you why you should never put the stuff in your car. But never believe everything you read on a website, right.

Usually the suggestion is that slippery additives increase bore wear and eventually lead to increased oil consumption.

The thing which guides me is David Vizzard (who I have a lot of time for) states that oil additives are a bad thing. So because he's an awful lot brighter than me I believe him.

One tip - read the back of the bottle. If it says "Shake Well Before Use", steer well clear. If it needs to be shaken, it will separate when the car is stood up. This leaves gunge in your sump which will clog your filters / galleries. Check particluate size as some additives use particulates greater than the maximum that will pass through your oil filter.

You have to be really careful with this stuff as there is more to it than meets the eye.

Lucas oil additive is supposed to be very good, "Choise of Drag Racers" if you beleive the adverts. The advice in the previous post is sound so do some homework beforehand.

Dave Vizzard says theres two additive products which he has found have made benefits in some engines / some applications and one of them I'm pretty sure was the Lucas oil additive and I'd blown if I can recall what the other one was off the top of my head.

IMO you're bets just buying a decent oil and changing it frequently

When i raced i always used ZX1.

It was a straight formula with no shaking up before adding.Thats a big no-no as stated above.

Mind you i did get a load free for having thier name on the side!!! But it was good and kept wear of the bores and crank to a minimum. :D

Guys,

This is my first post here so hi!

I'm one of the people on that Crewchief guy's feedback record that rated him positively - That's because I actually waited to see if the molyslip stuff worked first before rating him- I put it in a 1983 BMW 525i with 175k miles on the clock (Not bad eh? Apparantly they do 250k no prob if looked after!) - Before this it had always had a slightly rattly cam (I was too lazy to adjust the tappets despite this being easy on this particular design of OHC 6) and it would do 30mpg at 75 mph. I know this because BMW's, even that old, have a very accurate MPG guage that measures the pulses of the injectors etc. rather than relying on engine vacuum. After a few hundred miles I noticed I could do over 80mph and get 30 mpg, plus after 1000 miles the rattling disappeared!!! Maybe it wasn't tappets after all as I can't see how it would have cured that? Anyway I was well chuffed!

On this basis, I agree that not all people will see any difference if they put this in their car, but I know an equally large amount of people will say they had a similar experience to me - To be honest it'Bananarama! and miss but as I do a lot of miles in a fairly uneconomical car it was worth it for me.

One thing though - Slick 50 - Stay away - They can't prove it works, believe me I've tried to find independant tests that prove it does and there arn't any - Why do you think that might be?

Anyone care to add to this?

Hope this helps!

Dave

Ok. Tried it. Seemed to do the trick as I had really low oil pressure but with this, Valvoline 20/50 and STP thickener it came back up a little. Not fabulous but better. I don't think it will ever be a cheap fix but I do believe in some of these products. Ran a 350 Chevy on Activ8 and cheap oil for ages when it really should have not been running at all.

Oh and you can buy Molyslip in Halfords, saves on the p&p..!!!

Actually this is an american formula, not for sale here for some reason - The only similarity with the stuff in Halfords is the name - Anyone wanting to know more should contact that guy on ebay as he's a pretty knowledgable engine builder - Makes a nice change from some muppet who is pure sales, no experience!!
