Fluid all over my crazy paving :(

Post by Anonymous »

Was out in the old charger the other day and I thought I smelt a funny whiff. Got home and after parking up noticed a little bit of the old red fluid on the crazy paving :(

turns out my trans cooler pipes have been run between the headers and the engine block, which after a fair bit of rattling and shaking about has actually worn a hole in one of the pipes. So Im asking is this a common thing to run these pipes through this tight little space or would it be better to run them along the body via some flexi connections near the trans housing. I thought along the inner wing, down the bulkhead etc etc. would be a more appropriate route.

Opinions please. Oh and does anyone know a good place to get some pipe, and some doofers for belling the ends over (no funny comments please Kev).

Yours, loosing his fluid....

Cheers guys, what type and size of pipe? Do I measure outside diameter? Steve mentions copper pipe above, wont that corrode? what pipe did you use steve?

Trev, email me the name of your guy as I want to make decent unions for the flexi to solid piping. Does he sell the pipe clips for mounting on the bodywork?

I have found fuel injection pipe works well for trans coolers, and my top tip is to use proper fuel injection hose clips, they have an overlapping band, unlike cheapo worm drive clips, and are far less likely to damage the pipe or leak. I Favour the stainless steel ones.

I had a funny trans pipe experience once. (Kev, shhhH!) on a mopar

Got trapped under the sump and got flattened!

Theres already a fluid cooler on the front seperate from the rad. its connected by flexi hoses. I bought some 10mm copper pipe, will this be too big (pressure drop?) Im sure i can buy some flexihose to connect onto some compression joints on the pipe but i need to make sure i get the fitting onto the old nipples off the gearbox, which are incidentally a bit crappy looking,

Anyone know where I can get a goof nipple supplier (please kev, no...) I will probably buy a flare tool actually and hopefully get the number of trevs hose guy.

All this talk of bell-ends, nipples, and hoses... if my wife was reading this...

Trev, thanks I may take you up on your offer. I phone your hose place today but they are not open on saturdays :(

Anyway my main problem is getting the nipples for the trans. Anyone know what thread goes into the trans for the cooler pipes, so I can order some?

Good news! :D

Its all done, got some nipples from Customville (who are so close to my house if I stood on my roof I could see the shop). Sorted out the piping.

Tried to call you on Saturday Trev as I could have done with that flare tool, everywhere I asked they all said, "ooh cant flare pipes that size mate". I had to get the job done over as Im having the windows on my house done and had to move the car off the drive...

I ended up soldering the pipe onto the back of the fittings hat go into the gearbox, then flexihose between this and the piping on the bodywork.

Does anyone have temp gagues installed on their transmissions? Or oil pressure / levels gagues?

I have engine and trans oil temp gauges as well as a water temp gauge because I am a worrier. I keep them in the corner of one eye all the time I am driving.

My car has a oil pressure gauge of sorts in the dash as standard. It is not accurate but I know where the needle normally sits and that is good enough.

What do you want to know?
