Ball Joints

Post by Rebel »

Time to change the ball joints.

Is there a specific type I should be looking for or is the original the best? Need to do all of them, upper and lower.
Where's the best place to get them from?

TIA

The most important thing is to have the balljoint socket before you start, buy one when you order your upper and lower joints and you 'll be glad you did ;)

I just did both my top ball joints. (Good luck   )
The lady I use in New Jersey did them for $27 each (plus post obviously).
Are you just wanting the ball joints, or a whole rebuild kit like the link?
Can give you her details if it'll help :dontknow:

Thanks for the link Andy, and the offer.

Will deffo order the ball joint socket as well, Adrian

To be honest, not really sure what I need. I haven;t had a chance to have a good look underneath yet, there was a lot of banging and knocking coming from the front passenger side last time I drove her. I know it probably aint the upper ball joint though as the wheel isnt leaning in / out. I had all the front end bushes replaced in 2006, and only use for about 2 or 3 thousand miles a year so think it unlikely that the bushes will need doing again (I wait to be corrected though :) ). As far as I know the ball joints are all original so, if the banging isnt a ball joint it might be worth replacing them anyway ?

Always use a grease gun John, all nipples get done every 3 or 4 month even the propshaft that most people seem to ignore or forget about :thumbright:

I think I'd be checking out the Control Arm bushes, especially the lower ones...

Hi Rebel,

Always try and release the upper balljoint on the car first, before touching anything else!
The B/J socket is 3/4'' drive so a 3-foot breaker is best!!!
Once you have got it moving, you can then release the torsion bar adjusters and so on.
A torsion bar removing tool is sometimes needed if they have never been orf before.
The fun starts when you have to remove the LCA rubbers and sleeves from the LCA.
Some peoples burn them out, very amateur!!!

If you have any probs I will tell you the secrets for a Guiness and a roll-up or three LoL!

Good luck from bacca :thumbright:

ps I have ever told you the story of when my Lower Balljoint collapsed and the car grounded out???
