Dear Rock Auto
How do you guys work out so much cheaper than others, are you brokers for the parts you sell or are they all actually in stock?
e.g. 1970 Dodge Dart Rear Right handbrake cables
You have 4 different types, so do you have all 4 on the shelf or do you have special deals and buy them in as needed?
Curious rather than being nosey
Like you website BTW, very easy to use in the main part

Our prices are lower because our costs are lower. Local stores have to buy inventory, put it on the shelf and pay someone to stand at a counter looking up parts in paper catalogs or in the store's computer system. A part may sit on the shelf for a year or more before someone with that particular vehicle needs that particular part and decides to buy it from that particular store--when they do, the store owner needs to recover a year's worth of cost in one sale.
RockAuto customers choose their own parts using our online catalog. We ship directly to our customers from wholesale warehouses or manufacturers. We have no retail stores, no counter-people and we don't have a lot of money tied up in slow-moving inventory. We pass the savings on to our customers with lower prices. Our cost savings are all in distribution, though--the parts we sell are the same first-quality merchandise you'd find in any reputable store.
Unless our catalog states "Non-stock item--shipping delayed up to X business days" in the description, the part is available.
If you need further assistance please email service@rockauto.com or call us toll free at 1-866-762-5288.
Thank you,

I'm going to ask this again on a Rock Auto thread - the stock seems great, and I ordered stuff about five years ago for my first Dart and couldn't fault the service BUT every time I look at something now the shipping is insane. like, three times the cost of the parts. I know that shipping costs have gone up for everyone (I've just spent sixty quid to get a two-inch long fuel pump drive extension sent over here...) but is everyone finding this to be the case? is it something that is just coming up from ordering online and I'd be better phoning? or something to do with parts coming from different depots?
I'm just bewildered because Rock are taking out ads in the UK mags, and clearly servicing an international market, but with shipping costs are way more than the UK sellers every time I look up a part

Hi Paul
Hope you are well
I think the shipping is just a fact of life, BUT, what is annoying when you buy something thats small enough for a jiffy envelope and US traders want $40 to ship it. Had a part recently and the postage was $8 on the post stamp....so how do they get to the rest of it.
I've got a mate in the US who will buy and ship it at cost

Unfortunately, Jeg's, Summit, Rockauto etc are all over charging foreign customers for shipping and handling charges.
What they dont seem to realise, is the internet has made the world a smaller place and now, there is a potentially large customer base outside the US. However, not only do we pay high duty on the part, we pay it on all handling and shipping charges as well. So as a consequence, what looks a good price to start with, ends up expensive by the time it gets to your door.
For this very reason, i mainly use small traders with minimal overheads, who send everything to me USPS at minimal charge .
