Leaf spring repairs

I found out today that one of the leafs in my drivers side rear spring is broken. Having heard bad things about the quality of new replacement springs I was considering getting it repaired rather than buying new. Does anyone have first hand experience of repaired springs and if so what's the verdict ? Worth doing or not ?

Be prepared, you'll most likely need a new centre bolt, the old ones are often rusted solid through the leaves.

Cheers Ade. When are you thinking of going ? I'm not working next week so was considering taking a trip up myself. :-k

Most things on the car are done up finger tight, Steve. Rusted solid would make a change I suppose.

Thanks for the info guys. :thumbright:

The place that did my spring will make you a new leaf to replace the broken one and then re-temper the lots for you and it will cost about £220.

I had Sperry Springs in Worthing (Lancing now I think) do mine on the 55 Chevy. New leaves to replace broken and re-tempered existing. They did a superb job, at a very reasonable price.

When you finish the leaf springs what is the best way of painting/treating them so that the movement between the leaf springs does not create rust and show through....Don't really want to dismantle them either as I am lazy ;)

Wrap them in denso tape, keeps them lubricated and out of the weather

Denso tape is a top tip, a mate of mine has also tried shrink wrapping his springs...yet to see if they last the distance though! 8-)

Wont galvanising get them too hot and lose the spring temper?

I have no idea to hot dip galvanized would be dunked in a bath of liquid zinc/lead at 370°c

Would this hurt ??

Powder coat them ???????
