Best Oil.........
OK whats the best oil to use in a straight six? I have always been taught that its 20W/50 but having read reports about slow oil pumping from that type, any body any ideas.................
I forget who this quote comes from but its someone like Smoke Yunkic or that ilk....
The best engine oil is one thats changed regularly!
Are you familiar with the API standard ratings on motor oil? I always try and pick one which has the highest API rating in a mineral oil for my chosen viscocity. Price plays a factor too, but some fleet oils and the like come in an API SL full mineral at ?6 a gallon plus VAT whereas you go look at Duckhams or whatever at ?15 for 5 litres and its only SH or SJ...
As for type, bless 'em the Mopar hand book does't want to be pinned down on this one. It recommends all manner of oils depending on altitude and climate and use.
Kev's call of the good old mineral Castrol GTX is a good 'un, it used to often be on special for about ?8 - ?9 per 5 litres from Halfords rather than te full price about ?14 I think. But compare the full spec of the Castrol to Halfords own brand... Identical! And as Halfords don't own any refineries I suspect you're getting Castrol oil in the plain red can, and its ?7 for 5 litres. I've used it quite a lot and never any problems.
Avoid any oils with no API or BS or ISO ratings as these are just reclaimed oils (the stuff that comes back from scrap yards and service centres) which is filtered and boiled or something to get the crud out and then rebottled and sold for like ?4 or ?5 a gallon in supermarkets and discount car accessory shops.

Just to add, I've had a similar dilemma recently... After a few slack years of care and duty to the Charger, nothing that's a hanging offence, I had an oil leak for some time that forced me to top up with incorrect oil occasionally and also on long hard runs the car would use a bit of oil I would top up with the best I could put my hands on at the time and oil changes were few and far between!
...However I've decided to take a little bit more care of my engine, now regular oil & filter changes are in hand and after searching high and low for a decent Mineral oil I?ve stayed with 76 High Performance Engine Oil 20W-50 API-SL
I'd always had Kendall?s recommended to me for Classic American applications, but as it's like hens teeth now and would have to travel to Azerbaijan to pick it up I searched around for a good US Mineral Oil and have found a good supplier for 76...
Does anyone have any opinions on 76?
Also wanted to ask for recommendations for Oil Filters, type and supplier...? Cheers
