splitting an auto trans from a motor

got an engine and trans sitting in the garage as 1 complete unit

its a Borg warner 35 trans of the aussie persuasion i.e has the same bands and friction material as those that went into heavy duty applications like taxis stonger than a jag triumph rover one anyway

somebody wanted a 35 didn't they? £50 i have no need or desire

what do i need to do to split them apart, apart from the obvious removal of the bellhousing bolts

does the converter just slot into the trans?

or do i have to crane the thing into the air, get underneath and undo the flex plate so that the converter stays in place

i.e is the converter bolted to the transmision in some way

i know nout about this stuff never having owned anything other than a go-ped that had a torque converter (and it was a right Bananarama! to get of when it cracked)

will oil come out?

Hi Dave,

Can't you just Bananarama! on to its side and undo the verter bolts? It should just pull out but could be messy if still full of trans fluid, I would unbolt it if its not to much agro

Or even easier, let whoever wants it take it off :)

If you undo the bell housing bolts and just pull the trans apart the converter will just stay fixed to the flex plate and crank.

BUT!

There is a danger of damaging the pump on the front of the trans or the converter itself as the neck of the converter slides into the pump and the input shaft of the trans slides up the inside of the converter neck and engages inside the converter.

So always take the inspection plate off the bottom of the bell housing and remove the 4 bolts holding the converter to the flex plate. Then the engine and trans will separate, leaving the converter engaged in the trans.

Mmm so shouldn't have put the crane way

if i roll it onto its side its not getting back onto the trolley again without the help fo 4 strong young fellas

or indeed a crane

inspection plate off
converter bolts undone if I can turn over the motor MMMM

fill it with oil and hit it with the starter....maybe

or i just unto the bellhouing and spin it....MMmm it bolts on to both bits

I'll have a crack at the wekeend

Take out the spark plugs and turn it over with a big socket on the front pulley nut :thumbright:

That would be a 1-1/4 inch socket. ;)

Hi Dave999.
I just had a look at the VH service manual for the hemi 6 auto.
Just like Dave said.
No surprises involved, just like a V8.
One thing that may help so the converter does not slip off the input shaft as you are separating the auto from the engine is to use a C clamp or similar on the bell housing so the converter stays inside the bell housing.

Or you could make a strap-wrench like a giant oil filter removing tool!
