The diameter of the register for the bearing is different, I think the drum spindle is larger

A Drum spindle is symmetrical.

A Disc spindle has cast in lugs to take the caliper brackets/carriers.
They can be hung in front of, or behind the wheel depending on which way round you "swap" the spindles on the car. I always opt for "Behind" but this usually means you need to use Dash hoses instead of OEM style rubber ones.

The Caliper brackets/carriers are interchangeable to take larger discs - the bolt holes are in the same place.

'70 and '71-'74 "E" Body Disc spindles have different size bearings. They take different discs and are not inter-changeable.

Be VERY careful in doing a brake swap without lots of research.

Thanks chaps - as always.
Just chin scratching as usual. Even the 'all in one' kits are for 'drum spindle'. Just doing some research really. There do seem to be a disproportionally high number of options. Its all part of the big pie-in-the-sky plan... :)
