you are correct pete, in fact with an open you can hold one side and spin the other, time you got a spool in there anyway :D

Yes, I think I worded that wrongly Jim,I know if they turn opposite directions its an open diff. The real question is would a suregrip turn the same direction as the other side :thumbright:

and yes Jim may be time for a detroit locker, anybody got one going cheap :D dont know about a spool on the street anybody running one with no problems ?

Don't forget if they are proper shagged out they won't even hold up to a hold one side and turn test, especially the cone type

all the ones ive worked with pete turn together, if they dont its either knackered or open diff, i guess you do get a certain amount of slip but not enough to turn one side without the other

Think Gary is right there, should have a small tag on one of the cover bolts something like the ones in these pics,

if it has a suregrip in it you wont be able to turn the wheel as you have to overcome the suregrip to turn the wheel.
Open diff jack one side up and leave one wheel on the floor and the one off the floor you will be able to turn

Most will turn if they are not brand new and turn both wheels. But they will be heavy to turn. Same if you only jack up one wheel. It will turn but will be very hard to do so.

These and LIMITED slip diffs. Not locked.

Only ever seen any kind of tag still on a diff once I can remember. It may have been there in the 60s and 70s but don't expect to find one after all these years unless the car has been in a barn since they walked on the moon.

Mine went with an almighty bang leaving the startline at the nats, thought broken halfshaft or propshaft, but still drives.but locked up like a spool!with no backlash on pinion what so ever! Not pulled it out yet but I assume it's Bananarama! .
Found an axle at right money but don't know it's a sure grip hence the question :thumbright:

the spider gears might have smashed and jamed it into a locked state or welded themselves to the cross shaft

if they have there will be bits floating about would be shame to put dents in your ring gear teeth as well

No, not driving it Dave. Just need to find some time to pull it out, but I don't think you can repair them anyway. Probably need to put an ad in wanted section :thumbright:
