Ace Cafe - End of Summer Riot 5th Sept 2012

Post by RobTwin »

Anyone else? Always a good nite this (along with the Spring Riot in May).

Good weather forecast too so that should help make it a good un. :thumbright:

Might even have the Polara there....

I got as far as the end of the M1. Spent the rest of the evening under the flyover at Staples corner eventually getting home around 1:00am.
Not my fault though ! Bolt fell out of Lewis Camaro new brake caliper at about J5. Didnt realize what it was until he applied the brakes at the end of M1 and the offside front locked up as the caliper flew out from rear bolt and wedged the wheel.
They stop pretty quick when that happens - as did I following in the Charger.

Managed to limp to the hardstanding under flyover. Spent rest of the evening in charger roaring to and from Eurocarparts and Midnight Motors in wembley looking for appropriate bolts/hacksaws etc etc.

C'est la vie. Best evening for summer riot in years too. Gotta love these old cars.

On the upside (there is always an upside) I did get to spend about 3 hours tearing round the streets of north London in a Dodge Charger. There was a time I'd have given my arm for that ! :)

We got off lightly then!
Well, we were ok in the daily, coming down the M1, we sailed round the North Circ to the Ace, but Stu's journey in the Polara wasnt so easy.
Cos he comes down the A1, then A41, he got held up in the trouble at Brent Cross flyover caused by a burst water main on the North Circ. After about an hour of going a couple of miles, trying to find another route over to the Edgware Rd or back on the North Circ, the Polara decided enough was enough and cut out and wouldnt restart.
Presumably, at that stage, just cos of the heat, so he left it 20mins to retry but still no joy.
Left it a bit longer but still just cranked over with no hint of firing.

So, thinking it might not be just the fuel that had got too hot, and armed with a spare coil & ECU/orange box in the trunk (see we have learnt something after all these years ;) ), Stu first replaced the coil (the new one we've just bought for the Plymouth, so not technically a spare  ) and tried the key again.
Nada. Zilch. As Morgan would say.

Then tried the ECU. And success! So whether it was the fuel getting too hot, the coil or the ECU, or a combination of the three, who knows but it ran fine after starting and Stu got to the Ace at around 8pm. 2 hours after he should have.

So quite an easy night of it compared to yours and Lewis' :(

And loads easier than the people who've got 3 days of digging, leak-fixing and relaying to fix that Bananarama! water leak :x

Aw guys - reading that I know exactly what you mean.
So - did the car still work with the old ECU or had it actually popped ?

Dunno Morgan, it started up and ran fine with the 'spare' orange box (the one we took off the Satellite and replaced with the FBO kit, which lasted for about 100 miles  ), which was at least 10 years old, and Stu left it on to get home.

I'll have a look at the one he took off - an orange box that had lasted about 7 years on the Polara, on Sunday, see if there's any signs of damage.

Might be worth trying it on again too see if it works now everythings nice and cool, but it might be best to wait and see how we get on with the GM HEI unit on the Satellite, and if that seems ok, get another for the Polara :-k

Anyhoo.... back to the Ace, I'll post what few pics I took later on.

I feel a bit "Here's what you could have won"

Still, looks like you were OK for 68 chargers. (Its the LAW that you have to have at least 2) :)
