Drums to discs

Changing from power drums to disc do i have to change the brake booster?.
I've got an aftermarket Disk/drum master cylinder but read somewhere
I need to change booster,also said to change metering block for proportioning valve. Any info greatly appreciated :thumbright:

Hi Jerry

You will need the correct master cylinder if going to a disc set up, its all down to residual pressure that the drum and drum M/C has I think. If you used the same one then your discs would be grinding all the time. You need a drum/disc one

The above sticky has useful info but you MAY need to do the following, but this is based on my A body so it may be different

Change out the spindle to a set off a disc car
Change the M/C as above
If it isnt power brakes at the moment, now is a good time to swap to it
People either go four pot calipers, good but 4 times as many parts to leak
I went for single caliper floating type on mine, more than adequate for my use
Buy new brake hoses and some bleed nipples in case the ones on your calipers (if they are secondhand) are siezed


I'm sure there is more and I stand to be corrected by those that have your swap :thumbright:

No need to change the booster.

Fit an adjustable proportioning valve in the brake line going to the rear brakes so you can adjust the brake bias. You don't want the rears to lock up before the fronts.

I belive as long as you master cylinder will bolt to the booster and the rod from the booster is long enough to actuate the master cylinder

you will have no problem

however if it is a manual master cylinder it will have a rubber bush for accepting the rod from the brake peddle pivot, think that needs to come out because its not necessary for the fixed rod from the booster...i.e you can't loop you foot under the peddle on a badly adjusted brake peddle set up on a boosted car and pull the rod out of the master cylinder becuse its miles way safe between booster and cylinder hence hard rubber bush not needed

the only issue you might run into is that 4 bolt or 2 bolt master cylinder issue...how many mounting bolts does your booster take.

Dave can I do away with the metering block and run straight out of the master cylinder to the rear and out of the cylinder to a tee then off to front discs

I would say no as this is a fail safe until so in front pop a leak you still have rears.

What break set up did you have and what you installing as i have the same question at the moment ;)

if by meetering block you mean the thing with a wire to it for the "brakes are buggerd" light

i wouldn't

:D To many Dave's,gets confusing. There SSBC disc conversion i got second hand a few years ago off ebay. Maybe not the best setup but cost about £300 all in with shipping and virtually brand new. the master cylinder is an inline tube one i got off an MMA member a while ago.

Which one is this 2 bolt 4 bolt ++

i have 68 charger with manual drums all round. (4 bolt patten master)

Now fitting viper 4 pots up front

Rears will be a single piston disk set up.

I dont want to us a servo booster.

Can i still use my drum master with a front rear valve inline :scratch:

Will It's a 4 bolt not inline tube but right stuff one just had a look.
