Which oil and how much of it?

Post by Pete »

Hi guys, had a couple of debates with people on this point recently.

I need some oil for the Barracuda for Saturday, having broken the motor in using 20/50 mineral oil (Cam did not need breaking in).

Also the sump is huge - it will take over 10 litres; and has a swinging pickup with single external AN 12AN Line.

I have been recommended Valvoline VR1 for the motor.

Would people go for straight mineral oil, or semi synthetic, or full synthethic?

Engine should red line at 7000rpm.

The Mains/Rod clearances are .0025".

It has a full grooved cam bearing to feed the rocker gear.

Also, given the sump capacity; how much would you actually put in it (there is no windage tray).

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Pete

I think I'd put 7.5 Quarts in it and keep a close eye on the oil pressure gauge for a few runs, 'cos you don't know how quick the oil will return to the pan. I'd use a good quality 15/40 mineral or semi synthetic, it's always worked for me.

For what it's worth, I run Valvoline VR1

VR1 does seem the popular Hemi race choice...20w50 Quaker State worked fine for me on a loose build and a warm engine, but things have moved on some since I was a lad...

I'd put as much in it as you dare, (8qts?) no tray/scraper?+swinging pick-up=min 10qt sumps, don't take long to empty the sump with a HV pump and heads that hold that much oil up there....

get the video out Pete :thumbright:

I put 10 lts in the coronet

VR1 is good stuff, never had a problem with it
VR1 20/50 mineral or
VR1 10/50 fully syn (that what I run coronet on)
In my Falcon I use 10/60 millers fully syn this is a real popular oil for circuit racing for both V8's & anything turbo charged: opie oil man recommended this to me for my S7R engine

Amsoil 10w40 AMO in the Road Runner. It holds 7 1/2 litres up to the full mark but I run about 7 litres.

Thanks Guys, lots to think about there (and not a lot of time to make a purchase).

I can get Valvoline in the area, but still torn between mineral/semi synthetic. One place said they never stocked 20/50 as there was no demand....

Also on volume as I am concerned about emptying the pan and also over-filling and creating a "Red Arrows" pass.....

Keep the ideas coming, chaps :read2: :thumbright:

I use VR 1 mineral, with an additive because of the solid cam. just change it fairly regular.

Pete some say big race sumps don't need a tray, some say deffo yes with a scraper as well....which way do you go?

I'm not a Hemi expert but I would stick a tray in there and feel better about filling it a bit more and have the crank protected rather than keeping the oil away with less quantity...

I get my Kendalls from Chris at WASP
Also use ZDDP additive for cam protection. Available on ebay and Burton Racing.
