Engine out...........pieces of piston in the sump

Post by Derek »

I was going to carry on from the old thread but decided to start a new one so here goes.

As most of you know I had a tapping noise coming from the Charger a while back, cut a long story short it was a rod bearing starting to knock, I put in new shells and all was ok as crank was not damaged,

Anyway, got that sorted and a few weeks ago I decided to drop the sump and have a look at the crank just to make sure all was still ok, got a bit of a shock as I found what turned out to be to pieces of piston, they're from under the oil ring, one bit was in the sump the other in the oil pick up, don't know how long they had been there.

I still used the Charger for a couple of weeks, local show the other week and Wheels Day on Friday.

Saturday morning drove the Charger down to Anton's workshop and within a few hours with the help of Anton and Andy Clarke engine and gearbox were out and stripped down to a bare block, crank still looks good with no marks on it.

Anton gave me the keys to his workshop so that I could go down there over the weekend, I haven't been happy with the look of the engine bay since the garage fire two years ago this easter, I spent a couple of hours today cleaning the bits you can't get to when the enging is in and now it's looking like it used to, much happier.

I'm going to hone the bores put in new shells and rings, I'm going to have a word with my Scott to see what parts he has in his garage so that I can crack on with it, if he can't help I will have to order the parts and wait, should have it all done by next weekend though. [-o<

Duncan, the pic doesn't show it but it's stripped down to a bare block. :thumbright: it will be honed then cleaned.

..and a re-balance? Where do you go for that?

 ........Blimey Derek!

Looks like the Charger is never gonna let you rest!

Cant iagine what would cause the piston to fail like that unless something has gone wrong during the casting/forging process?

Here's hoping that the damage to the rest of the internals is minimal! :thumbright:

Shame to read this Derek, but look on the bright side, it wasnt a rod through the side. And now the Engines out its a good excuse to do all the other things you want. Good luck :thumbright:
