Primed the pump (clockwise) got 70psi at the gauge, left bank of lifters starting to pump up. Nothing at the rockers yet (i havent turned the engine) OIL LEAK. pouring from region of oil filter.
The filter is tight. the plate it attaches to has the paper(not rubber) gasket in place plus blue hymer. What has happened?
Leak is from the oil filter plate. I have found an oversize rubber gasket for this plate. Is it a case of a) paper gasket first b) fit oversize rubber gasket c) bolt down plate?
The fasket should be a large thickish card affair (about 1mm thick) do not use sealers of any kind and there should be paper washer type gasket that goes ovet the nut if it is the 90 deg type, make sure it is spotless on all surfaces.
Terry, I had the same thought! At the time it leaked I was running upward of 80psi and hadnt yet turned the engine. had the impression that the oil had no where else to go and the filter seal is the weakest link.
Terry, I was pretty keen with the drill (I had the impression that you had to be!)when i primed it. Are you referring ta failure in the oil filter or the pump. My pump is new as is the filter. which did you have to replace?
I know the one. it was difficulut yesterday to tell which had leaked (or both) the plate gasket or the filter. I think its the filter mostly. why dont these things work as intended! I'm off to have another go!
I had the same problem some years ago on my old Barracuda notchback, ending up doing the same as you, replaced the gasket at least 3 times, covering the drive in oil every time, in the end found another plate ( that was straight and true ) and made a gasket up from rubber sheet, it never leaked again.
Thanks guys. The oil pump isnt the problem Will, its the filter and filter to block application. I have a new gasket and filter arriving tomorow. I have two plates to choose from inc the one from the 318 that was fine in use and both leak. Skippy, not sure how i make a gasket that i sperfectly round to fit , but I will try vaseline although Alex said to use nowt on it.
