3rd drive band worn badly, what colour is the oil? if it is brown and smells burnt the band has probably broken up. i had the same problem with a th350 box in my last car

The oil is looking fine. I have had the problem in the past but it went away. Basically, in D it shifts thru 1 & 2 but just doesnt get to 3, give it any stick and it loses the drive altogether. Could mis adjusted kickdown linkage cause this? Its fully connected but i wouldnt swear to the accuracy of the present adjustment.

Put the kickdown right first then see where you are.

Adjusted the kickdown which helped but...
wheres my oil trans fluid gone? It was low so i put in near 1 litre of Dexron. Checked the oil after a short test run this morning. Showing almost nothing on the dipstick. No trans leaks either.
How much fluid does a727 take?

Err. Yeah. No fluid would do that too.

You check the level after warming the car up and putting the trans in every gear a few times. Then let it idle in neutral while you check the level.

Oh and you may find it expensive to buy if you cannot get it in large containers.
Screwfix sell it very cheap, will deliver it to your door, and it does the job!

Having said that I just checked their website and I don't see it anymore. Shame because it was VERY cheap there. :(

Dave, i was aware of the fluid checking process but didnt want to over fill. Now, pints to litres conversion and try some more!

18 pints = 10 litres (approx.)
I was recycling all my old oil the other day and guess what, yes i 'recycled' the 3 remaining litres of Dexron that I had in an unmarked container.
Sometimes I think I bought a Mopar to show everyone else how NOT to do it :D

Ah! The oil fairies drank it in the night before you drove the car then. That would explain it. :P

At least the "problem" is easy sorted. I once left the piston seal out from one of the clutch packs and wondered why the trans was slipping?  Realising I would have to take the trans out and completely rebuild it again was one of those "take a deep breath and count to 50" moments. :D

The bad news is you had to rebuild the tranny, the good news is, you knew how to!!
I'm currently guilty of monitiring too many aspects and not doing one of them thoroughly! Next road test coming up...

Sorry to say Terry has been and read this and we have had the same
problem.

Clutch and rear band shot. Need rebuilt NOW. Problem will only get worse. approx price for this rebuilt was to us ?400.00 plus. Sorry Miles.

Front pump bush worn causing oil not to get to rear clutch pack, bush now egg shaped instead of round. May need new pump as well. Moving kick down bar only increases oil pressure (hence moving shift speeds)

It overrides the governer that is speed related and so you get an irratic shift if it is far out.

Having not enough oil in the trans makes the pressure drop off and the clutch packs and bands do not work. With a bit of luck that is all the problem is.
