Le Mans Classic 4th-6th July 2014

Post by MattH »

Having been to the last two events in 2010 and 2012 (its bi-annual), the Le Mans Classic is a fantastic event and well worth the cost and the journey. The racing runs for 24 hrs but it is not one race, it is 3 lots of 6 races for different age groups so it is easier to follow whats going on.
Practice starts Friday and runs through the night too. Watching 60s Le Mans cars going through the forest at night is something to behold.

Its a great weekend of motorsport, check my article in Connected from 2010 all about it. The atmosphere is electric and the town of Arnage on one of the corners of the track is well worth a trip in the evenings for a meal as all the classic cars go and park there and rumble up and down, a proper Classic Cruise night.

I have set myself the target of having the Challenger rebuilt and liveried up in time to drive it there. My son and Dad are both coming along too, and some friends including James Demon and Mustang Mark, 11 of us in total.

We are going on the shuttle and the convoy will consist of 73 Challenger, 71 Demon, 68 Mustang notchback, 2008 jeep Wrangler and a large modern motorhome.
We have got camping at the circuit itself at Tertre Rouge, booked through the Triumph Sports Six Club. I am a member but they are selling camping pitches to non members as well. This is a great spot which has camping in view of the Dunlop Bridge and Tertre Rouge.

There are various options for accomodation, not just camping. Hotels nearby and some cabins at the circuit.
Entry ticket for the weekend with a paddock pass was £80 through the TSSC, camping £150 per pitch which will get a large tent on it (4 people).

If you ever considered it, then make the effort, you wont regret it. Last 2 times we went in modern vehicles, hence the desire to go in something old and be more a part of the event.

There are various companies offering package deals. Here is one that has camping at the circuit.

They are about 1 -2 weeks apart. The Classic is not as crowded as the main 24 hr race which is starting to become a weekend beer thrash rather than motor sport.

The Classic is the one to go to in my opinion. :thumbright:
