Stupid trans questions

Post by MattH »

REALLY stupid question. Should I fill my trans before installing it, or just do it through the filler once in the car?

Also I have one stud and the rest are bolts for securing engine to trans, any idea where the stud goes? It is one of the bigger thread ones?

Yes, that is a silly question. :geek: ;)

Fill it after installation, it is a lot easier and it will not spill so much when the trans falls off the jack!!!

I find it better to install the filler tube once the trans is in place due to the clearance and the tab that mounts to the bell housing.

The Stud is for the starter motor.

The Bell housing is all Bolts.

What he said.

One thing to check though. I have found that some gaskets overlap the hole for the filler tube when you tighten the oil pan on. This makes pushing the tube in almost impossible. So just make sure the tube will push home correctly before you install the trans but remove it again during the installation so it is out of the way.

as pete and dave have said plus the stud is the bottom starter fixing, dry dipstick tube and transmission case with thinners or brake cleaner etc and put a bead of silicone around it level with the o ring when you Bananarama! home and lock it off the silicone will ensure no leaks,
when fitted put 1 gallon down the tube no more it will puke out the breather in the bell housing once you can run the mtr up keep filling trans a pint at a time till drive comes in without revving it get it on bottom mark running in N then roadtest it gently, ;)

make sure you have both linkages set correctly shifter and pressure,
