Bonded Challenger screens - DIY job ?

Post by MattH »

Anyone fitted their own screen to a Challenger or other car with bonded screen?

On the face of it it seems to be:

Clean both faces REALLY well.
Put PU adhesive sealer on (Tiger seal or similar)
Lower screen into place with wedges to centre it
Put tape up onto roof to hold it for a few hours

Job done, remove tape, fit wipers.
Or have I missed something??? :read2:
Should i just get a friendly fitter to come and do it, I have the glass?

PS. i'm not quite ready to do it yet, just thinking three steps ahead all the time.

Trial fit the glass on the frame first. Use masking tape and felt pen to draw reference lines so the glass goes on centred.

The kit comes with rubber blocks to sit the bottom edge of the glass on so it is the side to side reference you need to centre.

You beat me to it Dave, I've used that stuff together with the blocks and wedges and it was a nice easy job.

Fitting a windscreen with the big rubber gasket was a different story!
The pump don’t work coz the vandals took the handles.

I had a new screen fitted to the Alfa last Saturday and the bloke held it in place with 2 big bits of very sticky masking tape, to stop it sliding down while the sealer went off (tho it does sit on a couple of adjuster blocks at the base), and he said don't use the car for an hour but after that the tape can come of and you're good to go.

Dunno what sealer/adhesive he used tho :-k

I was thinking of polyurethane sealer/adhesive whic comes in a cartridge for sealant guns, they do it black, white or grey. Just used some to stick / seal the scoop to the bonnet and it's used for allsorts of bodykit sticking on of panels etc.

I've got two pairs of suction handles Matt and I can speak to Andy (brother in-law) cos he was a screen fitter :thumbright: for hints.

Bet we could do a CRACKIN' job on that screen ;)

Too easy to make a mess with that stuff or set the glass too far back in the frame for the SS trim to sit firm against the glass.

I always go for the option least likely to invite Mr Cock-Up round for tea.

I'm quite looking forward to this, many hands make light work etc.

I think Dave is right, DIY is easier with the butyl tape. Modern urethane works well enough (actually it's better than the tape IMHO) but it's easy to mess up, and again as Dave said you need to get the bead right so the stainless trim sits correctly (at the right height).

I'll be interested how it goes either way!
