Bad Luck for Mopar Racers at Easter Meet

Post by Les Szabo »

Just a quick snippet of news from the saturday at the Easter meet on some of the Mopar Racers I saw...........

Went over to see Turnip, and the Cuda was broken.....right hand head was off, no piston in one of the bores, but was told, not catastrophic, crank grind etc. and all would be put back together hopefully.

Mark Bailey with the Silver '68 Cuda had just installed an Ally block etc., this led to a 150lb weight saving from the front end, he was hoping for some PB's.
The car unfortunately did an instant vertical wheelstand on the launch and hit the parachute extension bar which saved it going right over. Damage after it came down was quite severe, with some chassis/sump/and possible crank damage.....another Mopar out of comp.

On a better note however, the C&S Racing Dart was running strong on 9.5's, and Tigs Chally, after removing the wheelie bars which were unloading the tyres was back to running in the low 9.6's, they had calmed the car down at the front end and he was now breaking the 60ft beams with the FRONT tyres.

Other noticeable performances came from the Super Stock engined 396ci Chevelle of the Williams Bros. with huge wheelies and consistent runs in the 10.40's.

You need to check out some of the Turbo Mazdas, etc, etc ....

Saw some at the Shakedown Nats in NY, some unbelievable fast little motors

As you can gather from the my pics we had a Pit Pass, and did the usual 10 mile walk up and down the pits on Saturday, found the way the cars were parked a bit strange as this was the first time I had been at a race meeting for a looooooong time.

Never saw the Notchback at all, except for on the webcam the previous day, seemed all ok then on that run. Nicely set up car from what I have seen of it on facebook etc. Makes me wonder though as to why, as its a relatively mild motor in that at car to run 11's.....mind you s*it happens I guess.

Tbh, I wasn't that impressed with the Pod and how different it is today, having to pay £5 to sit in the seats, £1.50 for a supposidely hot shower, much preferred it at the Nats. We were parked up with Tim Stanbury's Camaro, and had Tig right next door so got to meet them both and had a good chat which I enjoyed almost as much as the racing. Got to say hello to Rob Loaring who suprised me and said, hello its the "Red Baron", I had to think for a minute what he was talking about....silly old me!!.......oh and by the way, Mark Bailey told me he had a noise check and was found to be over the limit, was advised that he will have to fit SILENCERS, when the rule comes in!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lez the Easter do is always a bit hit and miss ,,,more of a test and tune for some .....The pod have redone it a few times over the years but it seems to be dying ...When i first crewed for Grumpy,, Easter would be packed ...Six TMDs would be there from all over Europe to tune for the first FIA round in May,let alone pro mods and the rest..They would leave there trucks there for May ....I guess the economy has not helped....They should allow a few classes in at Easter that are not sanctioned ,for instance Superstocks

I agree, nothing wrong with SS at the Easter meet, from what I saw of it, it is a far cry from what it used to be all them yrs ago. Luckily I didn't see any corsa's or ford galaxies go down the track on saturday as I did on the webcam.......that I'm afraid is a big no no, no matter how we are supposed to bring new blood into the sport.

Only thing I would mention Pete is that according to Tim Stanbury, Ladder Bars are in, 4-link out in SS...he wanted to run in the class to get some much more needed track time as he has some misfiring probs which are driving him mad, as in from 9.01, to 2 x 9.47's then to a 9.90!!!!, but then he is b/halved which is out anyway.

Would've thought the rule would go, stock modified suspensions only, this would not include ladder bars, would be a bit fairer?.....perhaps once the class gets BIG, rules can be enforced a bt tighter.
