Alternator wiring :)
Hi,
In order to improve my charging system, I have bought this:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... OU:GB:3160
I was recommended the above alternator should fit and provide a nice light addition to the car.
Can anyone point me in the direction for how to convert my external voltage regulator system to this new alternator?

Can I run the alternator to the starter motor - where the battery is. Or Do I have to run it back to the battery (which is in the boot)

I take it if I unplug the voltage regulator, both will read 0 if the ignition is off. Then one of the cables will read 12v when the ignition is on? Thats the one I want?
I've fitted the alternator but not done the above bit, just run the 12v feed from the alternator to the battery and im still getting the 11.89v issue. I guess I need to do this IG to other cable bit?

The alternator needs to know how much to put into the battery , so you have to have a sensor feed to the voltage regulator so it knows how much charge to put in , on a Lucas or Bosch unit the small wire that is on the plug at the rear of the unit goes via a 2.2 watt bulb to the ign feed wire , when the alternator output makes more than is in the battery the light goes out and it starts charging, just like on your daily ( the light with the battery symbol on it )
On another note the battery is only built to take so many full cycles in other words from full charge to full discharge and back again so every time you start the engine it is a fraction of the cycle when you have nothing to do you can sit there and work it out based on the an hour of the battery , draw of the starter motor,any other electrical load that is not ign controlled etc etc etc

Yes you connect the wire that is live when the ignition is switched on connected to IG, then it should charge. If you wanted to fit a charging light, connect a wire to to the L terminal to one side of a bulb holder and connect the other side to a switched live. the light will come on when you turn on the ignition and go out when the alternator starts charging. This type of alternator does not need to have a light to work so you don't have to fit one.

You guys are amazing, my car is now charing 13.5 ish (goes up and down) v at the alternator and battery now.
Old one and stupid external voltage regulator has been chucked over the shoulder.
First time out in the dart today since the new expensive sump and cage. Yay for petrol stations
