transmission ID

Post by Ed »

the engine and transmission in my coronet are not the originals. I have almost certainly identified the motor as a 1978 440 but I haven't found anything out about the tranny.
The previous owner said it used to have a 727(?) in it but it started slipping in 3rd or something, so I also have that as a spare as he let me have it.
But he didn't tell me what the replacement was.

here is a picture of the numbers stamped by the sump pan

any info or links to a website much appreciated.

The best way is to ID the shape of the pan and there are plenty of diagrams on the web - it is most likely to be a &27 - is it a push button or later cable type?

Had a quick search and I reckon its a 727 from a B or C body. Not sure on year.

At least it looks as though you have the correct box to handle the 440 :thumbright:

Forgot to mention it has a floor mounted shifter rather than on the column as the original. no idea about cables or buttons yet?

here is a picture I took of the only website I found with part of the number on it.2801541.
totally forgot about it and cant remember what website it came from.

The bolt pattern to fix a trans to an engine is different for big block and small block. (B/RB and LA).

So it is physically not possible to bolt a 904 to a big block.
