Hi I'm Sammy and yes I am a laydeee but please don't hold it against me! I have found in other forums I get ignored!

Anyhoo I love Muscle cars, hot rods and drag racing. I used to crew at the Pod which was awesome.
I own a'67 Mustang coupe drag car, (not taken it up the track yet and it is for sale so I guess I won't).
I also own a '72 VH Valiant Charger 770 which I absolutely love. I have seen a few threads relating to it on here which was a bit weird but be assured that it is in good hands now lol

Looking forward to making new friends and getting some advice from other aussie Charger owners

It's the blue one lol. A chap called Rav sold it to the guy I bought it off about a year ago. It had some serious issues and I'll never know how I got it home! It had skinny tyres and huge nasty rims on it, it was like trying to control a shopping trolley in ice. It looked ridiculous from the back, it was jacked up and there was about 8 inches of shackle hanging down at the back. Luckily the guy I bought it from threw in the original wheels so I put them on, I have had air shocks fitted, the brakes were knackered so I had all that replaced and new tyres. It handles much better now. Needs a new carb so I'm in the process of sorting that out. Some say go Holley some say stick with Carter. I am leaning towards a recon Carter from Hemi Performance - but any thoughts would be really appreciated
The exhaust is blowing a bit too so that is on the to do list!

I was hoping to see you at the Pod on sunday but you had gone! your Charger is the only other one I have come across in the UK, but then I saw a red one there the same as mine, think the guy was called Pete?

Hi Sammy,
Welcome. Your car has ended up near where it started. Ray had it after a guy called James in Cambs restored it.
Glad to see it back in the club, it was one of the best around.
Mine is the grotty pink one, a VJ with VH front end.
You should get plenty of advice on here from members to keep your car sorted.

I had to go, daughters birthday party and broken car = either misssed and AA home

or slow drive and on time...luckily the latter played out

well you car has a completely rebuilt steering box......!

carter

made 1barrel 2barrel and 4 barrel carbs

if yours is original it will have a 2 barrel carb

yours is a VH so you need a low top Carter BBD

BBD stands for Ball and Ball Dual 2 barrel

(a single is a BBS and a 4 will be an AFB (alloy 4 barrel) or AVS (air valve secondary))

Ball and Ball being the originators of the design.

the deisgn hung around from the 60s to the early 90s on jeeps

the later the carb the more plastic stuff to block off they have (its all emissions stuff we don't need on a VH valiant)

low top means it has an accelerator pump plunger going through the top cover into the bowel

high top has a lever for this through the side of the bowel.

couple of choices
any old carb off ebay and get it rebuilt here
brand new chinese knock off
aussie reconditioned

but 1 thing i would do with all of them is swap in the original rods jets and wisker like spring from your old carb

you can tell a 318 one becasue it has a small hole drilled in both throttle plates.

high top notice how nothing goes through the plate with the sticker on it
will work but not orginal used on VKs

i.e this would work but you would need to swap over all the linkage bits for the kickdown and choke

chinese carb

you can get these from china/hong kong cheaper. possibly out the back door of the factory

mind...the only thing wrong with your current one is probably worn throttle shaft bushings

the base of the carb is made from cheese. the action of the throttle wears the carb base making a big air leek and the car won't idle the idle mix screws make no difference and the engine stinks of unburnt fuel

you can get them bushed with nice brass bushings by any competant engineering firm. just make sure the peine over the throttle disk screws again once they are done

don't get a big block BBD they don't look like the pictures in the ebay adverts above

and your carb, if it is original will be made under licence by EMAIL PTY LTD licenced from Carter corporation

Email being a company in Oz that made carter carbs prestolite alternators etc

basically Guns for Hire, made loads of car stuff in Oz becasue Aussie cars had to be 90 odd % locally made, easier for EMAIL to make the parts on request from the US OEM supplier to chrylser in the US for CAL in Aus.

US mopar used carter Aussie mopar used a carter carb made by email locally

aussie cheese is softer then US cheese so the email carbs ware out quicker

(obviously not really made of chesse, mice would eat it...but may as well be)

Yep thats my car! It has had a lot of owners. Aw don't call your car grotty! They are all unique lol. I can't seem to upload any pics, they are all too big and I'm using a tablet so not sure if that makes a difference?

PS you can get a holley 500 to fit....possibly needs an adaptor

works quite well

or you can swap to a 4bbl inlet and go for a holley 600 vaccum secondary

or an edelbrock 500 or 650 AVS (the 500 works well on rover 3.5 v8s the 650 is workable on a 318)
