Lower ball joint question!!?

Post by MilesnMiles »

Ok, I'm about to replace the lower ball joint on my RR as it was a notification at the MOT. I could see movement when the tester used a pry bar.
Roll forward to this weekend. With new ball joint at hand I started to strip the front assembly.
First thing I noticed is that the nut that holds the lower ball joint to the LCA is pretty much hand loose
The torque setting should be 100lbs of torque. Is it possible that my ball joint is fine, the bugger just wasn't torqued down sufficiently, hence the movement at the MOT test??

With a bar in there you should see no movement test yourself

Mm, see what you mean! Bid does labour the point. However, when pryed at the MOT test there was clear movement of the joint, so I guess I carry on with the job.
Even so, the retaining nut was not far short of finger loose, nowhere near 100lbs of torque. May be that why it wore out .
