Have a read of this....if you wanna keep a little more bottom end use an Airgap intake...this is what can be done from a bone stock 383 with good machning.

Interesting to see what can be achieved with careful prep and the right parts, for not a hell of a lot of money.
Following your philosophy Les!

This was still a Mild engine, the cam is not too radical either, its starting to get a bit "tasty" with 244 dur@.050 but it will need those KB slugs installed, the big 850 Demon is a weapon that needs to be thought about by you guys, its not too big, as you may think, (I proved that with my 340), they may cost more, but modern carbs have a much stronger signal booster strength unlike the older versions and will give you the good throttle response you still want from a smaller carb but these will add more Torque to a short stroke motor like this which is most important along with the 4 deg advance on the cam, add a 1" spacer and it will be better still, if you have the room.

If you were to add a pair of Stock closed chamber Eddy ally heads to this combo (285cfm ootb), opposed to stock 906's (210cfm at best), this motor would make over 500hp!!! at around 9.5:1CR with good quench at around the 6300rpm mark......you would need at least 3.7 gears and a verter around the 2800 stall with that cam but you'd have a humdinger of a motor from, as most call it, an old slapper 383!!

I can take that - its a fair observation... I'd be *delighted* with 450 out of mine with a few bolts and tweaks ! Still, as you say, first things first. Gotta stop the one I've got stinking and see where we are... vacuum and carb first. :)
