67 Charger Rear Lights question

Post by SJH »

Hello,
I need to remove the lenses from the rear lamp on my 67 Charger to convert to UK MOT. Has anyone any advice on how to do this. how it comes apart etc ?. Before I damage them !

TIA

Hi,

Have a read of this thread:

http://www.66-67charger.com/forum/ubbth ... Post153086

You may need to be a member to see the pics but it's easy enough to sign up and there are a few 66/67 UK owners on there as well as here.

Might give you some ideas on how to do yours and also on the disassembly of the rear tail light assembly. If you haven't already you definitely want to get a hold of the '67 service manual which you can grab from here:

Hi Adrian,
Thanks for the prompt reply and the helpful links. I have got all lights working for MOT. But at the rear one side is brighter than the other. So I need to get the lenses off the rear lamp to check the reflectors. I need advice how to dismantle the rear light housing ie remove the rear light lenses without breaking anything!

Hi,

No problems. As far as the rear assembly goes it's pretty easy, just a bit cumbersome. Pop the trunk and at the rear their should be a plastic shield which needs to be removed. Once you've done that you can then disconnect all the bulbs.

To removing the housing there's a bunch of screws/bolts you need to undo, again from the rear in the trunk - make sure you get all of these, there's always one or two hiding :). I think there's about 20 you need to remove in total. Once all these are undone the assembly will literally come off in your hands. Just be careful - The whole thing will come off as one piece and you don't want that dropping on your foot ! If it's been there for a while it may need a bit of a push to dislodge it and if that's the case push from the inside of the trunk out.

Once it's off you can put in on a bench and take out the lenses and give it a good clean, put in reflective tape etc.

This is from memory as it was a little while ago since I took mine out.

Once you get the assembly on the bench put it lens side down and you should see about 10 screws around the edge. Undo them all and the chrome surrounding the lenses should come off. That will then mean you can get access to all the lens pieces and also the inside of the light housing should you want to clean them out too.

You will need to remove the entire rear light assembly from the car to do this - you can't do it in place AFAIK.
