Leaks! Tranny and diff!

Post by XP29 »

I seem to have a leak where my tranny meets the prop shaft as the rubber there is wet with droplets on the bottom, but no drops on the floor. Also the bottom of my diff looks wet and there is an oil mark on the floor under that. I do know my car had sat for 20 years till being used late last year. I'm guessing the seals had dried out and now I'm building the speed up they are not happy.

Although I want to learn and do work on the car, I think this will be beyond my capabilities. What could I be looking at to sort these out?

The trans is an easy one to replace. Just drain the fluid, pull out the prop and the seal can be removed.
The diff is a different story...

Thanks db, is just pulling out the prop not as scary as I am picturing? Otherwise sounds doable. I think I have an A833 box (manual 4 speed).

I need to have a proper look under there, but the diff is a SureGrip. It looks wet on the bottom of the round casing and the part between that and the prop. The prop itself looks dry, but the exhaust boxes either side of it are splattered in what looks like a tar like substance.

It doesn't sound like you have much of a leak tbh. If it's just sticky splatter it may just be excess grease thrown out from the uj. The wet under the diff could be the gasket or the seal, or just someone filling it clumsily! Give it a good clean and drive it a bit, see how much is actually coming out and from where. Unless the diff is leaking a lot, I'd leave it be.

The manual seal fits just the same as the auto- it's bonded into a steel pressing. Just lever/ tap the old one out with a big screwy and smallish hammer by the flanged edge of the seal, then tap the new one in evenly.

To drop the prop- first give it a good wiggle to check if the u.j.s have any play- if they need replacing, now's the time to do it! Undo the 4 little clamp bolts on the rear u.j. (a right pain to get at, you'll need to rotate the prop as you're doing it and possibly start them with a socket then wind then out with an open ended spanner) Drop the rear of the prop then slide the front out of the trans seal. (you'll then see the splined shaft you'll need it to engage with when you put it back).
Clean then grease it before sliding it into the new seal.
Check the torque settings for the u.j. bolts- very important they're correctly tightened! I always Loctite them just in case.

Give 'em a wipe and dry and see how you get on....it probably took 20 years to get into that state............

Thanks guys. I have given it a wipe down today after a run and will have a check on it. More pressing is I need to get steering and suspension parts replaced for the test.
