Holley 670 street Avenger question

Post by Steve »

Chaps....first question re my New Yorker. I think its carb related but not sure.

She starts and will run if I feather the throttle but stalls if I let my foot off it. Eventually when warm she will idle at 880 - 900rpm. As soon as I drop her into drive or reverse, she stalls. If I drag the footbrake and hold a few revs, say 1500rpm, I can move her.

Any ideas men? I am getting 5lbs of fuel pressure, fresh fuel, 14 deg initial. Havent changed the fuel filters but that will be next job. I will also try a remote gravity fed fuel supply to bottom out fuel starvation in the week.....just wanted to make sure Im not missing something obvious,

cheers Steve

If the motor is warmed up by then it sadly sounds like the Convertor is too tight......you can't tune around that if that is the case.

If you want tomorrow give me a call and I will explain...........

Steve, talk to Pete! That ain't he exact same symptoms my 340 had when I fist got it. Purple shaft cam and stock convertor. Changed both.
Slightly surprised with your car, presumed it would be standard but it has been around a long time to be messed with I guess.

Thanks Miles, will call pete later today. As far as I am aware, its all stock. I am in touch with the US owner so depending on what Pete advises, I may have a few questions to knock back to him.

Do you have a thread link for your problem Miles??

Steve, no thread. It was just obvious at the time. We tried to tune around it but as Pete said, no chance with mismatched parts.
If yours is stock it shouldn't be the case.
Is your Carb a 670 Street Avenger (not Eliminator?)
Either way, try disconnecting the vac advance from the carb and plugging it.
When we tuned my 670 at Shakey last week it dragged the idle right down with manifold vac due to lumpy cam and tight convertor. With the vac line attached to ported/spark it ran fine. This was something Pete picked up at the time.

If it is an SA,then there may be many issues lurking within, mainly involving quality control, or lack of it, which has been highlighted on more than a few forums, one of the favourites is a main airway bypass blocked by casting 'flash'. It would seem that the 670 suffered more than most, which is a shame as it is essentially a good carb, just needs taking to bits and sorting out, got one on the Mustang & it's ok (ish) but I'm about to ditch it for a 750vs.

Thanks men....i might have, and probably did make up the eliminator bit. Found the instructions with the car and thought it said eliminator.

Thats an easy one to check Miles and I will have a go later. The guy who sold her to me said he went for a drive in her before she was shipped off and said she ran great. Thats backed up by a subway sandwich receipt dated just before collection.

Seems weird that she runs and drives good in US then comes here and wont run?? Different fuel??

Ive emailed the seller asking about cam specs etc but Im sure its bog standard. I did find a newish comp cams sticker in the box of bits that came with her so maybe an aftermarket job?

l pick Petes brains later and try to progress things

The guy seems quite genuine Pete....we have been in regular contact since I bought her and he has pointed out all the faults to date, so hoping its just a glitch. If not, its all a learning process....ive never taken a tranny out before....well only in Thailand and that was many years ago!  :thumbright:

Did you have problem with the Gland nut in Thailand as well??

Or did the annular ring trip you up?

Probably needs a bit more initial timing for a start. Vacuum leak? Hose off the carb? Something not capped? Could also be distributor related, could be the timing dropping out as you put it in gear if it had a broken or missing advance spring.
