Carter 4bbl running rich?

Post by XP29 »

Today I changed my spark plugs for the first time. When I got them out noticed they are all a bit on the dark side as though the car is running too rich? The carb has been "rebuilt" by myself and a friend who knows more than I, we put a kit in and set the floats to what it said on the kit sheet. Turned the idle screws out to what it said and it starts and idles good. It does drive good (but if it's out it may drive better?). But the evidence is the plugs are black and it stinks of fuel if you are behind the car when it's running. So being a novice I have a few questions,

How do I sort this?

What are the setting specs for the Carter AFB?

If my choke isn't working and the butterfly fly type thing doesn't open, is this my problem and can I just wedge/hold it open?

Have you looked into the carb with the air filter off to see if the choke is pulling off? That's an obvious choice. That said, it would likely stall. Have you set the idle with a vacuum guage?
Don't know much about Carters, sorry.

Make sure the timing, vac & mech advance is spot on before you touch the carb.
Check the air filter too.

Those AFBs are a piece of pi55 to work on.

Guys from the club double checked the timing and vac at Duxford, not sure about mech advance (unless this is where the degs raises at 2500rpm? If so that's good). Will check air filter. Need to have a good look at the choke although not sure what I'm looking at tbh

Cheers for the link :)

I have been told Holley are a better carb than Carter/Edelbrock due to the can be tuned? When I have tried to search about it I find that some say that then others say Carters are better in that they are just put on and left alone.

What's the deal with your Holley?

Lough, I don't like messing with old carbs, rather buy a new one and start from fresh. I like the spreadbore carbs and I have a Thermoquad800cfm, but it leaked from every orifice when I tried it.

Here's my carb.
Now I've settled on using a 750 on my car I can let the Holley go.
It's had about nine months use and runs very well now it's set up.

Spec 670 VS Street Avenger, 4 corner idle, 66/70 jets, 5 power valve so enrichment does not come on too early, 31 squirter, yellow secondary springs, leak proof gaskets, floats set correctly at bottom of sight windows which means fine tuning he 4 corner idle is easy.
Comes with extras including correct bracket to fit Mopar throttle and kickdown, but will need the throttle cable rod from your existing car. Also includes a twin return throttle spring set up, spare 6.5 power valve, couple of spare secondary springs and some smaller jets, base gasket.
I need £210 posted and these list at over £400 now with Real Steel.

It would easy take my carb, but I don't want to turn your request for help into an ad for my stuff so I hope some one can chip in about Carters as I'm not familiar with them.

If the car drives nice, don't stink or make your eyes water, starts nice from cold, don't use too much fuel.........

The leave it.

If you haven't already done so drop in some fresh plugs, put in a new air filter element, new points, cap, rotor, leads.
Check voltage at coil to make sure your not losing voltage to make a clean spark.

If you get stuck I'll show you :thumbright:

Car drives great, but I've never had a V8 before so have nothing to compare it to. It does stink a bit and the plugs I just changed were a dark brown/black. Fuel wise it uses a fair bit but I expected it to. Not checked voltage at coil as yet.
