62 S Series cruising the Emerald Isle

Post by dubvalman »

I imported this car in 2006 - ish, bought it off a chap in Cheltenham. Saw it advertised on eBay while I was killing time waiting for a flight out of Birmingham. Postponed the flight out, hired a car, drove down, liked it did a deal and came back 10 days later and drove back to Ireland.

Currently gets special attention when I return to Ireland on leave from my job, slowly restoring it, but mostly gets cruised around a lot when I am back - any excuse.

Thanks guys, yes I like it and it puts a big smile on my face.

It is an Chrysler Australia Valiant S Series or SV1. They are the RHD drive version of the 1962 Plymouth Valiant V200.

It one of the early ones - serial number 056 - according to the previous owner it was imported into the UK by his father from Western Australia

Very unusual! Good story and worth looking deeper into over the Winter.

It has a 1967 Small Block 318 coupled to a 904 Transmission. It has had a disk brake conversion done on the front wheels.

The seats look like they are from a 1966/67 VC Regal V8 with the centre console coming from a Pacer or Charger.

I managed to locate genuine Mopar instruments and have fitted a full set - Temp, Charge and Fuel so they all work nicely and have the classic Chrysler smooth movement. Upgraded the headlights to H3s and H4s. Cured several wiring problems, and will rewire and fit AC once the body work is done and the painting is finished.

Fitted 14 x 7 Jelly bean mags - yes mags - they are period correct and made of magnesium. I think though when I convert the brakes I will change them for a set of American Eagles - not sure the style - or I may go with chrome steelies. I bought a set of American Eagles for my Holden Ute and they are great wheels - especially for price, could not believe the value.

I fitted new moulded carpets from Australia last May when I was on leave, and sourced weather stripping for the doors from the UK which are not too far from the original style and they were change at the same time as I did the carpets and underlay.

I bought a boot weather strip from Australia but it was rubbish so i located one in the USA for a Plymouth Valiant and fitted that. It is much better quality and seals well.

The video below was taken the day before I went to get a new stainless twin system fitted - which will have to be redone, when I got the car home and put it up on the hoist I noticed that Mr Exhaust man thought that the X pipe would be great located directly below the propshaft and that the mufflers should overlap the propshaft so they can make nice circle marks on the propshaft when you drive over a speed bump. It was not what I spec'd but as I was leaving to go back to the sand prison the next day we agreed that they will correct it on my next return to Ireland.

The engine is actually really good; it will go all day and pulls like a good thing. It does have a weird issue though which I posted on other forums and as yet have not got an answer other than everything I have already tried to cure it. Will not start when hot - not even try - just turns over - when its cold starts straight away.

I am going to rebuild the front end one of the next few visits home, I am considering the QA1 tubular control arms - not a bad price and they look to be quite good? It will be that or the original style control arms. I have found some new torsion bars and will do the rest of the hardware while I am under the fenders messing about with the suspension.

I want to convert the car to four wheel disks, and have been searching for kits. The diff is the 7.25 Mopar diff and the only person who seems to do the disk kit for that diff is the American guy Wayne - the Ram Man. He was also recommended by Dave from this forum and on other forums. If he does a kit then that will be the way forward for me. If not I am really leaning towards the hemiperformnce rear axle assembly. No real information or feedback - everyone says it’s too expensive, but I have spent many many many hours and days searching for alternatives, and it is shaping up that for what they offer - like for like - they are actually competitive and in many cases the cheapest.

Engine and trans is slotted to come out for a freshen up for both of them. I will do that when the Ute comes back from the paint shop. Hopefully that will be this month when I am home.

It will then be the turn for the Valiant to get the rot cut out, thankfully very little and the bits that are manky are the stock rot areas so there are rust repair sections available. Which is nice so that should keep the body work cost down as there will be no need for fancy fabrication and skin bashing.

Any suggestion for a new colour??

I have a few thoughts but like to hear suggestions - would hate to paint it then find out it would look so much better in ............... colour.

Well if you have waded through this far – fair play to you. I will put more pictures as I get them; these are all I have with me on my hard drive. Will swap them out for better ones when I get back and I am playing with the car in a couple of weeks.

After being covered up for quite some time - time to clean it up and start cruising around again
Image

Bit of a poke around while fitting the new bling
Image

Now that looks better - won’t be embarrassed to lift the bonnet in a service station now
Image

Better do something with the inside, it’s looking ratty
Image

Mmmmmmm new car smell
Image

Even the back looks nice now
Image

After removing the old weather strip – I felt the boot looked a bit dirty and could use a spruce up
Image

That’s better
Image

Carpet back in and vacuumed
Image

Finish the nice tidy boot with the original jack in its place
Image

A set of new clocks – Temp, Fuel and Charge
Image

Add new laser cut fascia from PLUMKRAZY GARAGE
Image

Think I will take the Jag today
Image

Just after I built the Valiant’s new house – about a year ago – I can tell because of the old rice burner in the drive
Image

Lots of chrome to polish lol
