What Coil?
Thinking my Blaster 2 coils gone bad as had no spark but did after putting an old stock one back on to test.
I have the Firecore ready to run distributer and no ballast.
Another blaster 2 or is there alternatives that look stock...ish?
PS Dont really want to have to wait for it from the States

I assume this is on an MSD AL6, etc?
In theory any 12V coil should be Ok if the above is correct. I do not know if MSD specify the resistance of the coil on its system.
May be worth checking on the MSD website. Their .pdf files are very helpful and informative most of the time.

I use these John, third of the price and designed for constant 12V without a ballast resistor. I asked Dave, our resident guru if its the same as the Blaster 2 and he confirmed it is the same

I see they also do a high energy coil, wonder if there would be any gains to be had?

I have made and fitted HEI to my New Yorker, inc coil, HEI unit, heatsink and wiring in a day and for around £35 all in. Only difference between this and MSD is (as Pete pointed out...cheers
), no rev limiter. I don't need one as I don't go above 1500 rpm unless Im drunk. Dave got me into this conversion and its easy to do. Only other expense, if you haven't already got the factory electronic ignition set up which runs a ballast resistor, is a good used electronic distributor and an electronic voltage regulator

Yeah sounds good but I dont need that as its all built in my dizzy Steve, just wondered if there was a difference between the 2 coils from the same seller... the one you have linked or the high energy one?

dlb198 will have a slightly reduced RPM range in comparison to a blaster 2 when used with an HEI 4 pin due to its slightly higher primary resistance
blasters of any type range from 0.5 ohms to 0.8 ohms
the DLB198 depending on who made it ranges from 0.8 ohms to 1.0 ohms
most HEI modules expect a primary resistance of 0.5 ohms to 0.8 ohms
I have however used a coil with a 2.8 ohm primary resistance on a six cylinder using an unbranded HEI and it worked fine on the street.
most electronic ignition modules use the primary resistance of the coil to decide on the dwell (on for charging up time). The higher the primary resistance the shorter the dwell. they expect to see the primary resistance increase as the coil gets hot. reducing the dwell as the resistance rises allows the coil to cool down a bit.
would suggest any coil in the 0.5 ohm to 1.0 ohm range to work with HEI modules
Johns dizzy has an in built CDI ignition so it has a modern copy of an MSD 6al style circuit built in. It uses the same trigger as a standard Chrysler electronic
as such if he has fried his CD module he can use an HEI module provided we can work out where the wires from his magnetic pickup come out.
if he hasn't fried his CDI then the DLB198 will work ok if a Blaster ii worked ok with only a minor impact on his RPM range. I can't think he uses 6500-7000 rpm very often. limited rpm range due to the ignition coil comes in like a soft rev limiter anyway.
HEI tends to be limited at 6500-7000 anyway it just can't switch fast enough for 8 cylinders at that RPM

I rigged up my old dizzy along with the ballast and electronic ignition and hey presto so looks as though things are now pointing to the module in the new dizzy... Real bummer

They have said they are going to send a new module but seeing as Chris Birdmans went pop before mine I dont have a lot of confidence ifits just another one of their modules
