New carter carb needed

Post by SammyH770 »

Hi

I need a new carter carb for my Charger (VH 770) can I get one in the uk? I know I could upgrade to a 4 barrel holley but that means changing the manifold and extra expense and I am already having to pay for a lot of exhaust work, new steering box and the prop shaft refurbished, and today I had the new trans oil pan fitted so there is not a lot of money left in the pot!

Dave sent me a link for a carter carb I think but I can't find it.

Thanks x

Hi there.

Are you sure you cannot resolve the problems with a rebuild kit?

I assume you are talking V8 here and not Hemi 6.

If you can run to a 4bbl manifold and carb I think it will be quite an improvement, especially if you now intend on keeping the car.

Hi Pete

The mechanic said we could try a rebuild kit but he's pretty sure that the carb is past that stage. It really is bad, I only just managed to limp home with it today. I would imagine a 4 barrel and new manifold route would cost a bomb with parts and labour compared to a replacing the 2 barrel carter?

Yes it is a V8 (318ci fireball)

Sammy......why not put up a wanted add for both and see what people have......may suprise you.
Maybe one of the local MMA guys may help you do the swap over to save on cost too???!

I have a 700dp holley which you can have for not a lot. The base plate was bent though and with a hammer and heat I've bent it back. :D

It is in bits, many bits. But all of the bits are there.

Maybe its a 'pain' you do not need but the offer is there, there is probably a better carb out there for a little more money, I'm sure someone would sell you one complete/ready to go.

What is your realistic budget - it may be cheaper for a 4bbl swap than you think.

Well I hadn't budgeted for a new carb and I'm having to pay around 750 quid for the exhaust work (has three holes - 2 on the manifold end) and the steering box which needs replacing. Then there's the prop shaft refurb, around 200 quid so my budget would be 500 at a push. Wouldnt think that would cover a holley, new manifold and the labour?

Another issue is filling it with fuel, if I try to fill it normally it just Bananarama! out, I have been using a bendy funnel but it is so awkward as the fuel hose is heavy and I have to hold the funnel in the filler hole. It takes forever. This evening I got to the garage and the bendy funnel was not in the boot but I managed to get about 3 quid's worth in the tank and drove it down to Halfrauds and bought another bendy funnel, then drove back to the garage and only managed to put 20 quid in it as my arm was going dead! I dread filling it :(

Blimey!

That is (in my opinion) a lot for the exhaust.

Can you and a friend undertake some of the work yourselves as a manifold swap is not hard, you just have to be methodical.

There have been 4bbl inlets on eBay for around £250, probably less for a 2nd hand one and a lot less for an iron one. I am sure one of the club members such as Duncan will have an old one kicking around.

A 4bbl Carb may need some work to hook up the throttle and the kick down. I have a few spare SB brackets somewhere.

Bailey Morris at Eaton Socon are cheap for prop work and are extremely good.

Shopping around can pay off.

Probably some rotten rubber hose somewhere. easy ish fix, I wouldn't pay anyone to sort that. Take some photos in the boot of your car. Should all be quite exposed I expect.

The price for the exhaust includes parts and labour, he said its a lot of work as he has to take the headers off etc.

Bailey Morris was the company he said he would send the prop shaft to, he reckoned about 200 for a complete refurb for that, do you think that is about right? I'd take it there myself but i don't have the tools of the know how to take it off. I'll have to have a think about the carb, fuel consumption will go up too, and its bad enough as it is lol.

Is the car in a shop already with you, perhaps you could pause the work and take a rain check on what you need/want doing to the car. Rather than doing it all in one lump. Maybe for example the steering box is still okay, as might be the prop? But if the car does not run, then the carb would be more a priority?

Often a 4bbl is more efficient than a crude 2bbl carb, as with a Vac secondary one you are running most of the time on small primaries.

Only when you give it the beans the other 2 bigger secondaries open and away you go!!!

Where are you based - I am in Cambridge too.
