I have had a quote for the following repairs:

Steering box rebuild
Recon propshaft
Exhaust repairs

(not including changing carb and manifold)

£2,300





Custom Car want to do a feature on the car so he would have been getting a bit of free advertising.

again this seems excessive.

the fella who had your car before you had that steering box rebuilt about 4 years ago and then never drove the car

so either

1) he didn't get it done (if he didn't he talked a good story over weeks of posting)
2) he was conned (possible)
3) the rebuilder didn't set the worm shaft bearing pre load followed by the sector to ball nut mesh

in which case that needs to be done before you consider a rebuild.

I can get it to Watford any work day you happen to be passing in your truck

give me notice and i'll dig it out, check it out, swap the worst UJ with a better one that I have in a box, taken from my car not because it was an issue but because the rear one fell to bits, cup fell off and the rollers came out) when I took out the prop last time, the new ones come in a kit of 2 and I replaced both.

that means I have 1 good second hand one in a box somewhere.

recon steering box is $450

750 if you don't supply a rebuilder

however companies like JayGee in the UK can rebuild a Saginaw power steering box.

yours will probably be a 1 1/16 sector shaft box 27mm
they also came with a 1 1/8 diameter sector shaft 30mm


Adjust what you have first though other wise just wasting cash

Proshaft services in Feltham charge about £120 to fit new ujs and re-balance a prop.

A full new stainless steel exhaust build is around £740 including silencers.

As Dave says get the steering box checked out first before you rebuild. Is this manual or power

Carb and manifold swap if you supply the gaskets, manifold and carb will be around £120 - £150

What is wrong with the exhaust.

from the pictures it look like rust holes at the lowest point in the system after the manifold ends in the header pipe.

it looks like a chop it out and weld in a new bit job to get you going with the option of a full new, manifold to silencer pipes later on.

I belive this will have cast single outlet manifolds with the ball and ring style clamps holding on a flared header pipe at each side

i.e 1 bent pipe to the drivers side (RHD) with a flared end and sliding flange with two bolts at one end. welded or slip jointed to the main system at the other

As I said in the other post. Expensive (Dougs) headers £600 delivered. Summit Exhaust system with mufflers is circa £250. Say £150 to fit.

That's a brand new expensive system for £1k.

The price for me is just a p take. A new manifold back system shouldn't cost more than £300-£400 all in fitted.

So £1900 for a propshaft and PS rebuild............

You should contact Dave Billadoo he does this stuff all the time he will be able to give you a much more on the money price to sort it out, N if he wants to fuc6 you in the as3 it wont hurt as he has a little pecker,,

Thanks for all your advice. Definitely won't be using that garage. Pete is coming to look at the car in a week or so to give me his opinion

I don't think the exhaust will be an issue I can get that done anywhere I guess. I just spoke to Bailey Morris about the propshaft but I would need to take the propshaft out and take it to them, I can't do that, I wouldn't know how to get it out or put it back in.

I think the steering problem is going to be a big issue, if it has already been rebuilt then there's not much else can be done but there is so much play, its probably quite dangerous really. The mechanic said it looked like it had some work done on it so to replace it instead but then he said you can't get a replacement so it would have to be rebuilt.

2) I'll check my spare prop-shaft out tonight. you will need it before the weekend if you want uncle Pete to fit it. (I know he is just coming for a look but I'm doing my best to play on his conscience)


3) rebuilt but not adjusted. once adjusted it could be fine.

1st adjustment should be done with box off car by rebuilder as part of the rebuild
THE second is usually done on car
PROBABLY Not done by previous owner because he was not mechanically minded

he probably just fitted it as it was fresh from the rebuilder


1st adjustment
undo hex ring
whack the bloody box top round a bit
do up hex ring

2nd
adjust the sector mesh so the box is stiff in the middle with the wheels off the ground. once engine is running no stiffness will be noticed

Get Pete to do that.
Job done
He loves that kinda thing probably
