replace oil pressure sender - uh ? ...how ?

So after getting a shiny set of three mechanical gauges, getting a pair (big 'n' small ) replacement oil senders and a T-fitting, ordering copper capillary pipe to replace the brittle plastic tube, deciding where the binnacle will sit, I got my tools and headed off today to install said set of gauges.
Thankfully, I started at the sharp end and didn't start feeding stuff through the firewall ...
(just so you know, sender sits at the back of the engine in my Challenger, against the firewall)
God only knows how the sender was put in, but I'm guessing it was while the engine was out, which would explain the spray over from the red paint the block is coated in - after removing air filter to gain access, its made no bloody diff' !
Do I need to remove the dizzy ? the ONLY aspect I have on it is from above, and I'm guessing (again) that the hex nut I need purchase on is below the "bell" - there seems to be a "stepped" ring around it but I'm not sure that it would mate with a socket.
To be fair, considering calling the whole thing off or taking it to someone who can ......
Currently, the idiot light doesn't function and although the levels are good and she doesn't overheat, I don't want to tempt fate.
Am I stupid to think there MUST be another port available to plumb into - if so, I'll just disconnect the old sender and leave as is ?
Any help appreciated, if you're close by and fancy a crack @ it, I'll buy the beer/wine/cider ......
