fuel gauge wiring

Hi,

Though I have had most other electrical components out of the dart at some point in time, I've not had the dash out yet.

I can't see (thanks to a roll cage bar under the dash :D) where the plug is on the rear on the dash cluster. I know there is a sender in the tank, which goes via a blue cable all the way to this gauge; it does not work though. In the past it has, kind of ish and been spot on level wise (give or take a full tank of petrol).

Any suggestions for getting it to work again?

I've tried grounding the sender cable, it does nothing now. In the past it used to move a little bit, to about 1/4 tank then give up.

I don't really want to do anything electrical on the car ever again but I could do with knowing how much fuel is in it.

There used to be a clip on strap to earth the tank to the fuel pipe. Often it pays to put in an additional earthing strap as these old ones corrode and make a bad contact.

Do you have the original tank or a fuel cell? Fuel Cells need to be earthed too for a variety of reasons.

Oh.

Oh....

That makes sense then, perhaps.

I had a the tank replaced with a new replica type, I can not recall any 'earth device of any sorts between the fuel tank and the shell.

That could explain quite a bit. Thanks Pete.

Will look like this; http://www.classicindustries.com/produc ... mf290.html

It bridges the rubber fuel line right by the tank, connecting the tank outlet to the metal fuel line.
