Was poking around under the bonnet making a list of stuff to do and I noticed the bracket for the throttle cable and kickdown cable was a little bent. (its practically made of tin foil. Add it to the list

Forgot about it. Drove car for the first time this morning (what a commute) and wow its different. Holds the revs so much longer than before. It used to change itself up before 2,000 rpm under normal conditions (would hold it if you nailed it) but now it hold to about 3,500 before shifting under moderate load. (bit lower if pootling) Car sounds better, kicksdown better (used to have to really hoof it to promote kickdown) and feels generally less lazy.
May need toning down a bit yet - changes have more of a 'thunk' to them if they happen to occur during a low-load moment (smooth under load) but all in all seems good.
Only posting for 2 reasons - 1) Check your kickdowns chaps, they do change on a cable setup it seems 2) Sanity check from the trans gurus that what I did aint gonna break it - (Oh my god ! No! The classic 3,500rpm mistake ! Your trans will explode etc
