Starter motor
Hi all does anyone know if the starter on my Aussie Chrysler 360 will be the same as Usa models ? I need a new starter & want to buy a hi torque one from eBay but the seller says it fits us models but not 100% if they same as Aussie model ? Thanks shaun

I'm pretty sure that Duncan is correct that they don't interchange, although I thought it was the tooth count that was different, you should be able to get your starter rebuilt or failing that, if you want to go the mini starter route, drop the trans & change the torque converter to an American version.
You can't have too much power, only a lack of traction!

aussie cars had
9 tooth and 10 tooth starters and there were 2 ten tooth starters
9 tooth with the starter drive shaft in the middle of the snout of the starter motor had a 25mm pinion at a distance of 24 mm to the ring gear with a 2 hole mounting 110 mm apart.
the pinion shaft in these starters passes directly through the middle of the circle that you could draw around the D shaped end of the starter snout
used on aussie hemi 6 some slant 6 and some direct-drive-starter-motor US street hemis (prestolite version I think) and some Aussie v8s
flywheel has 146 tooth I think.
10 tooth starter (no .1) was the same as the 9 tooth starter in all but teeth and pinion size, It had parts number Bosch 9-000-063-054.
The gear was bigger, 27mm, so they offset bored the starter snout and used a different gearing in the reduction housing to achieve a starter whose teeth aligned with the same flywheels. This one has a fatter pinion shaft and it does not pass through the centre of the end of the starter snout (the end is D shaped, if the D shaped end was scribed out as a full circle the starter pinion shaft would not be in the middle) it is offset away from the ring gear. which is ok cos the 10 tooth cog is bigger by 2mm.
this starter was made due to the previous 9 tooth starter having a reputation for snapping its pinion shaft and stripping the reduction gears
cars with this starter can use the 9 tooth starter or this starter and vice versa
10 tooth big pinion part number Bosch 9-000-063-021
same as US 318 360 383 440 most 426 hemi
used on some Aussie cars but not all, tended to be used on 727 and a few 904 cars.
this had a 32mm pinion at 24mm from the flywheel also had the usual chrylser 2 hole mount at 110 mm apart.
I think this is the one you need. to all intents and purposes its a bosch motor body bolted to the more or less universal Chrysler reduction gear
it will fit aussie and US cars but probably has the big power stud and 2 spade connectors instead of 1
some experimentation with the case earthed would be necessary to fit it to a US car
if you buy a dodge Dakota/denso mini starter for a dodge Dakota or similar dodge truck it will fit you bellhousing but you may need to swap to a different pinion cog on the starter.
pinions available from 8 tooth 22mm up to 15 tooth 36 mm for denso starters.
so based on the part numbers above what have you got?
and if its this last starter any US starter should work....and it probably has the 32 mm pinion
if you are happy to take the risk get any mopar application Denso starter and spend £40 on the correct pinion and a pair of snap ring pliers if you need to

having just this summer been through the same palaver
it was easy enough to pull up my text file of "stuff what I found out about starters"
its another area where suppliers take advantage of the fact that detail in respect to dimensions etc isn't well known by customers, so an application that is oddball has to be catererd for by a pinion swap. 1/2 hour work, yet the starter for the hemi 6 was £100 more than the 318....same bloody stater motor with a £15 pinion swap.
In an environment where everything is sold based on chassis number/year/manufacturer of vehicle rather than what you can measure with the Part in your hand a customer can be taken in by "we had these specially made just for you" gimmie a million pounds for it.

denso made 1.9hp starters for OEM petrol car applications and 2.5HP starters for some other diesel or more heavyweight plant applications.
only difference is the windings
so why pay $400 for the hi torque version from a supplier of after market parts when its just a tractor starter you could pick up at your local agricultural repairs place for £70.
rebuilds cheap ones use unbranded bearings and parts, expensive rebuilds use Denso parts, but where does denso get its parts made?.
maybe I'm just cynical

I probably got the ring gear teeth wrong
some had 122 some had 13? and some had 14?
but its the tooth size and shape that counts and the diameter of the flywheel. ring gear position in respect to starter pinion
not the number of teeth. just gotta mesh properly and provided the widest contact patch mid tooth
yet starters are sold based on ring gear teeth count.....?

Wow that's a lot of info. The Aussie starter I found on eBay says it has a 33mm 10 tooth pinion that sit 23mm at rest. I sent the link to the advert to the uk seller in daventry & he said that's the same starter that he is selling so I've ordered it & it should be here tomorrow. So gonna take off my starter on Saturday & hopefully fit the new one. If the new one is wrong at least I can try identify my old one whilst it's off. Dreading it being wrong now ! Shaun

to be honest I think you will be ok.
but depending on type of motor, as I say, all is not lost
if you went hi torque mini starter then its a denso or based on a denso and they have a huge range of pinions.
if your current motor is broken but the snout and reduction gears are ok I have a box of parts and we can fashion you one that works
your current motor is a Bosch design as such the main motor body is used across many ranges and has a standard Bosch pinion on the end of the motor shaft. the bit that makes it an Aussie Chrysler starter in the reduction gear head, pinion and mounting, they are eminently rebuild able and simple inside.
just a bit slow and heavy.

I've got my old starter off its parts number is 9001 065 834. It has a 10 tooth pinion. I've put it side by side with the new hi torque starter & everything looks about right but I've not had chance to measure yet. Tomorrow I'm gonna measure them both if they are same I'm gonna try it on. The only other thing is my original starter has 3 wires the new one has 2. On my car wiring there is the small wire that operates the solenoid & im guessing the other small wire is for the ignition if these have ballast ignition with 12v cold start like a lot of car that age ?.?
