Replacing ignition barrel/switch

Anyone done this job?
Could do with some hints as I read somewhere that I need to remove the steering lock ring which requires special tools
Any guidance appreciated.

It's not too bad Miles - if i can do it most can.You will need a hub puller - available on ebay for maybe a tenner. Not sure about the steering lock . Someone will post a link I'm sure as mine was on an ebody.

I've replaced the ignition barrel on mine, and it was a bit of a mission.
The barrel is held in by a metal pin/peg that has to be pressed in to release it, but you have to strip the steering column down quite a bit to get to the pin.
I managed to do mine with no special tools apart from a puller to get the bit underneath the steering wheel off.

As Bilko says, I ended up pulling the whole column out through the firewall. Aide Wornan sent me a link I'll see if I still have it

Its on an old laptop of mine that's steam powered and I cant remember how to paste on it. Plenty of pics and will make life easy.

Ok thanks. Factory manual seems to make it a little less complex. Problem seems to be puling the steering lock ring.

I had problems with mine, I was getting resistance on the contacts causing a voltage drop when in the run position.
I took the switch apart and found carbon / burnt contacts. I managed to clean them up and refitted the module.
Seems fine now.

Not had time to look yet, but were you able to access the switch wiring without removing the whole top end of the column?

That said, I still think it's the actual big notion barrel as it is loose when the switch is turned on.

Ok, done it. Only took an hour or so and no special tools needed.

Looks a lot easier than I thought it would be. Have a mate with a 74 Mercury Montego that needs to change his ignition switch as well, would have thought that the process would be the same or similar. Thanks for posting the link Miles
