Mouse nest...

Post by 80sTVcarhire »

Just found a huge mouse nest in my cold air vent (drivers side 69 Charger) when I went out to start her today. I took the vent off and cleaned out as far as my fingers could reach. Can anyone tell me where the mouse could get in and where the vent can be accessed to make sure I've got all my seat, carpet and floor mat out before I turn the heater on. Thank you for your help from very annoyed Steve.

The fresh air gets in via the grille in front of the windscreen, that area is a big open plenum, there are drain holes to let water drain off under the wings, not exactly acessable and often blocked. I can't see a mouse getting into the car from the outside that way. I normally blast it out with an airline, you get a huge build up of debris in there which is why the firewall rots out.

The void below the cowl panel has a drain either side into the area behind the front wheels between inner/outer fenders, normally you can't see it as it's behind the splash panels, on mine both drains were blocked with old rodent nests, I guess that’s why I used to get wet feet when the car was out in the rain, seems to be cured now

I reckon the little blighters get in there

If you remove the splash panel from behind the rear wheel you should be able to check it's clear without removing the front fender

Reckon you're right, the A bodies I'm used to don't have drains anywhere near that big, assumed all the body styles were much the same.

either got in that way or through the crotch cooler buckets under the dash

if you left a flap open a mouse could easily pole vault into the vent
climb up the metal support and live in the cowl

probably

I was driving along about 60mph in my Trans Am when a mouse ran across my leg up from the foot well, was not expecting that!

I found a nest under the dash, little micky had got through the fire wall due to a missing blanking plug!

A mouse is limited only by the size of it's skull. So basically, any gap bigger than 1/4" it can get through.

I would suggest leaving a trap in the car humane or lethal - up to you. Don't poison it. If it dies somewhere inaccesible you'll be sniffing mouse corpse for months.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Big thanks to Si the pictures will come in handy this weekend when I go hunting. In return spoke to a old hot rodder today he used to put cotton wool socked in pure peppermint oil in the vents, it makes your car smell great but burns the mouse sensitive nose. Double winner.

I would agree it has got in through the drain into the wings from the heater plenum. The holes are over an inch across and deep (same on a Challenger).
Once in the plenum its easy to run around in there ane build a nice in the air ducts with all the nice grass and leaves and fluff that gets caught in there.
