Timing lights and MSD ignition

Post by David Murray »

I've been reading that digital and dial back timing lights don't work properly with MSD ignitions...something to do with the multi spark. On the front page of the instructions for my new MSD 6AL-2 it says this too.

Has anyone had experience with this? Sounds like only the very basic analogue, non dial back lights will give an accurate reading.

It all seems to be a bit hit and miss as to what will work. Not used MSD for a few years now but it didn't like my digital Snap on light at the time, but the older Snap On dial back "ray gun" style was fine. A cheap Gunsons worked fine as does a battery operated Flaming river light, but you do need a marked damper to use these. MSD used to sell thier own light which had no advance feature either and was a bit of a lump. The bottom line is try what you have, you'll soon know if it plays up or not.
